The chief of police in Austin, Texas, addressed the controversial video showing a young jogger being arrested for jaywalking, insisting that his officers have done nothing wrong. In a press conference held Saturday, a defiant Chief Art Acevedo came out swinging against the critics of his department and refused to apologize for the arrest of 24-year-old Amanda Jo Stephen. Stephen was taken into custody while out for a run on 24th Street Thursday morning after she illegally crossed the street and then refused to give her name to police officers. Stephen's dramatic arrest marked by sobbing and yelling was captured by a bystander, Chris Quintero, whose video went viral after being posted on YouTube. On Saturday, a visibly irritated Chief Acevedo downplayed the entire incident and brushed off words of censure directed at his officers by social media users. ‘Thank you, lord, that it is a controversy in Austin, Texas — that we actually have the audacity to touch somebody by the arm and tell them, “Oh my goodness, Austin police we’re trying to get your attention,”’ Acevedo remarked sarcastically. ‘Whew! In other cities, cops are actually committing sexual assaults on duty, so I thank God that this is what passes for a controversy in Austin, Texas.’ Poster Comment: Arrest Acevedo ! Are people in Austin wimps? Is that how the men of that town would let those fat goofs handle a lady in their streets? How pathetic and disgusting. Why didn't someone assault them for assaulting her? Walk up and arrest them. Get a few of your friends and some of those guns you're always bragging about and go do the right thing. What a joke.
I keep reading crap about Austin police, the photo's make it evident that they're experts on the location of every donut shop in town......

UT would cancel thousands of scholarships of street protesters just to prove that all that college-talk of liberty/equality/justice is just bullshit when push comes to shove in a confrontation with the state's jack-booted minions. and what about the thousands of UT students? why aren't they out on the streets of Austin protesting on her behalf?

Yes it is. This in the land of corruption, in the grasp of a despotic dictator. I wonder how many citizens my government would be willing to kill to remain in power. 200,000,000? Rule of law is important to them. That's an interesting stat !

I just hope there are lots of Texans that are aware and as not happy about this as I am. You know I didn't really mean people in Austin are wimps. That's not fair. We're all powerless to a degree against this.

No, as long as least on of us are willing to stand up to villainy we are not powerless. God knows I have my own battles to fight at the moment but I took the time to write lee leffingwell insisting up the termination of Art Acevedo. Were I in Texas at the moment I'd be up there in person asking questions and demanding answers and action. We can not comply with legal orders from law enforcement officers who threaten us with criminal intent . We can not because once that line is crossed then we are only able to obey criminals with guns and badges. Thugs with state sanctioned consent to terrorize the public. Something more than an apology is required here. Some more men are needed to right this travesty of justice. Jaywalking is a ticket not an arrest. Any and all of us need to be writing people in office insisting upon immediate terminations. To: christine I just hope there are lots of Texans that are aware and as not happy about this as I am.
