CLOVER, SC (WBTV) - An elderly man was shot by a York County Sheriff's deputy Tuesday evening during a traffic stop, according to officials.

The shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. on North Main Street near Motseller Street in Clover.

Officials say Deputy Terrence Knox, a three-year veteran of the department, pulled over a pickup truck being driven by 70-year-old Bobby Canipe because of an expired license plate.

Canipe then got out of the truck and grabbed his cane from the bed. That's when, deputies said, Knox fired several shots, striking Canipe once.

"The situation is very unfortunate. It does appear, at this time, that Deputy Knox's actions were an appropriate response to what he reasonably believed to be an imminent threat to his life; however, a full internal investigation will be conducted," Sheriff Bruce Bryant said in a statement released Wednesday.

Canipe was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte. He is expected to be okay.

Deputy Knox was not injured. He has been placed on paid administrative leave, pending a full investigation.

The South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division (SLED) is now investigating the case.

Too incredible for words.

If "Officer" Knox cannot distinguish a walking-stick from a long gun, he should be summarily be beat with said stick, and then shot with the gun to teach him the difference.

We are in the twilight zone, friends.

Stop the insanity. To defend this is to be complicit in the shooting.

If I ever get pulled over again for something I'll honestly worry if I'll get ventilated because the "new breed" of cops have an itchy trigger-finger.

A cop on another forum had this comment:

"We've got no reason to believe the old guy did anything wrong. There's no sense in trying to explain away what happened.

If you're gonna shoot people every time they reach for something, it's just not the line of work for you."

Deputy Terrence Knox evidently squirts piss every time he see's his own shadow, he should be cut loose pronto.

Yep, they're shooting innocent people because their actions are defended by their supervisors.

Were you there? It may have been an "Assault Cane". How many small children have died needlessly at the end of an Assault Cane? Don't answer, there are no answers, only facts - we need to ban assault canes before the next senseless death! What kind of monster would want another senseless death on his or her conscience?

And then, after a complete and exhaustive investigation it will be found that Knox was completely justified in shooting someone reaching for the "cane of death."

Well then, no harm came to the hero and he will be getting a paid vacation during which he will be expected to go to the range and get in some practice. Not just wound old guys with canes but kill them before they can wreak havoc with them.

Let's not overlook the existence of cane guns. Although they're usually small caliber they do pose s threat, and I've seen advisory pamphlets (printed by The ADL) that show new and clever ways to conceal weapons to use against police. This gives cops plausible reasons for shooting people who aren't a threat but don't fully appreciate the potential dangers of traffic stops or other police contacts.

Anyone who doesn't wait with both hands on the wheel until a nervous cop instructs him or her to move is exposed to increased danger of being drilled for the crime of "making a sudden furtive, menacing or threatening gesture". And if any object, even a pink teddy bear is involved it's a slam dunk justifiable use of force under American law, much of which was created by cop worship TV dramas. We've seen thousands of unshaven hoods and shady characters try to get the drop on Officer Angel and his partner, and none of those scenarios ever showed the cops mistakenly hosing an African American police officer (which happened in Norfolk, VA and on the NYC subway) or a parent rushing a child in distress to the hospital.

Cops are among the biggest pussies on the planet.

They see shadows and immediately think that their lives are threatened. Ya know what, quit your fucking job and do something else for a living then if that's what it reduces your ass to.

Between unfounded paranoia and psychosis, these assklowns are a bunch of ringers, perfect for ensuring the State's supremacy and fiefdom.

This country is inhabited by fools.
