It’s Europe's problem. This is Russian power politics at its finest. The Ukraine has huge supplies of gas and Russia wants better prices from Europe. Even Germany, the economic powerhouse that it is, is over a barrel when all the fraulines wake up to no gas to cook Werner's schnitzel. As far as McKooK acting poorly, what else would one expect when the whiff of war is in the air?

The Ukraine has huge supplies of gas ...

The Ukraine has NO supplies of gas, and only benefits from the transit fees collected from Russian pipelines.

Oh! Russia has double redundancy north and south on Ukraine's route.

The Ukraine has NO supplies of gas,

Close enough for government work.

Estimates by US CIA[1] for natural gas in Ukraine:

consumption:53.16 billion cu m (2010 est.)

production:19.36 billion cu m (2010 est.)

exports:2.6 billion cu m (2010 est.)

imports:36.4 billion cu m (2010 est.)

proved reserves:1.104 trillion cu m (1 January 2012 est.)

And there's this:

Ukraine as transit route of natural gas

Ukraine remains the main transit route for Russian natural gas sold to Europe, which earns Ukraine about $3 billion a year in transit fees, making it the country’s most lucrative export service.[4] Following Russia's launch of the Nord Stream pipeline, which bypasses Ukraine, gas transit volumes have been steadily decreasing.[4] In 2004 more than 120 bcm of Russian gas was transported through Ukraine; this figure dropped to just 84 bcm in 2012.[4]

Russia–Ukraine gas disputes left many countries with a significant drop in their supplies when Russia cut off all natural gas supplies passing through Ukraine in 2009 and 2006.[15][20]
