Presstv An Iranian PhD student in the US who burned over 90 percent of his body in a suspicious explosion last month died on Thursday, police officials reported.

Saamer Akhshabi, 26, a Georgia Tech grad student in computer engineering, was burned in an explosion inside his Atlanta apartment on Feb. 4 and was transported immediately in critical condition to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he was hospitalized for one month.

Investigators found a suspected Molotov cocktail and several plastic bottles filled with gasoline and kerosene, but they found no evidence of illegal activities in his apartment.

"We have worked closely with other law enforcement agencies during the investigation of this tragic incident," Robert Connolly, interim police chief for Georgia Tech, said in an emailed statement. "The FBI has relayed that, to date, they have not developed any information or evidence indicating criminal intent in this investigation."

"Saamer was a brilliant student and young researcher,” his advisor, Constantine Dovrolis, said in a statement.

“Within the first year at Georgia Tech, he completed a groundbreaking study about the evolution of the Internet architecture, and his research in adaptive video streaming has been cited more than 200 times. Saamer was passionate about cross-disciplinary research, especially combining computer science with biology, and his dream was to help people using his research. His sudden passing is tragic and incomprehensible, but his legacy will stay alive in all of us who worked with him," Dovrolis added.

According to his family and friends, the scientific achievements Saamer and his advisor made in the evolution of the Internet architecture resulted in his assassination by certain companies.

Akhshabi was set to earn his PhD in May from the institute.
