Washington (AFP) - One in four American adults over 60 being treated for high blood pressure could go off their medication under recent guidelines issued in the United States, a study said Saturday.

The changes, which stirred controversy in the medical community, could mean nearly six million may no longer need drugs to control their blood pressure, Duke University researchers said in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

The findings are the first to analyze the impact of 2014 guidelines that raised blood pressure targets to 150/90, instead of the previous goal of 140/90, in adults age 60 and older.

"Raising the target in older adults is controversial, and not all experts agree with this new recommendation," said lead author Ann Marie Navar-Boggan, a cardiology fellow at the Duke University School of Medicine.

"In this study, we wanted to determine the number of adults affected by these changes."

The guidelines were issued by the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure.

Analyzing 2005-2010 data on 16,000 people in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Duke researchers found the proportion of US adults considered eligible for hypertension treatment would dip from 40.6 percent under the old guidelines to 31.7 percent under the new ones.

In addition, 13.5 million adults -- most of them over the age of 60 -- would no longer be considered in a danger zone.

Of that group, 5.8 million adults would no longer need blood pressure pills.

"The new guidelines do not address whether these adults should still be considered as having hypertension," Navar-Boggan said.

"But they would no longer need medication to lower their blood pressure."

[russteenails] I would like to take this opportunity to address anyone who is taking LISINOPRIL, PRINIVIL, ZESTRIL. For some this may be old news, but I could have spent far fewer months of unnecessary hell if I had known of THE COUGH. All drugs have side effects but some are unusual and not thought to be related to the drug. I was prescribed LISINOPRIL which is the generic one. After taking for some time my blood pressure was great, but I developed this nagging urge to cough. It was a tickle in the back of my throat, which I couldn't ignore. Having quit smoking some years ago, you might see how frustrated I became with a cough worse than any cough I ever had. Worse yet was my DR. either didn't know or he just downplayed my symptoms and didn't want to change my meds because my BP was doing good. FInally, I went online and learned of the LISINOPRIL COUGH. How the hell can a BP med make one's throat tickle causing one to cough once or twice every minute or two. I printed out the info, gave it to DOC and after switching my pills, I can happily say I have not coughed like that since. As my luck would have it, I suffered the side effects of the new meds but these were listed right on the bottle so I quickly got another different script. If you take this drug and smoke you may be mistakenly attributing any coughing to smoking. This is a cough that you can feel coming on and be able to handle as if clearing your throat. It won't work, and now to try and hold it back can make your eyes water. Then a couple loud hacks and the urge dies down for a few minutes. I hope this may help someone, but it would ultimately be better if nobody needs it.+6

[Rich G] Healthcare costs would collapse dramatically if we would just move from a system that profits from treating sickness after it occurs, to one that prioritizes preventive health care in the form of healthy eating and excercise. I realize it won't happen because too many people are profiting from keeping things the way they are, but one could hope. I have a part time job doing physicals for the military and after performing thousands of Blood pressure readings, it became easy to predict those least likely to have high blood pressure with almost 100% accuracy. It was thin people. Very simple. I have met many overweight individuals and tried to convince them to slim down for their own good, but many have deceived themselves into believing it is impossible. I tell them that if I locked you in a prison cell and fed you 1700 calories per day for several weeks, I guarantee you will lose weight. +22-2

[BrianE] Realise that this is only the start of gov't controlling what kind of medical care you will receive. I predict that eventually all of us will have to, by law, get a gym membership. Of course there will be exemptions for those to sickly to exercise or disabled to the point that doing any kind of exercise would be impossible. And I will also make the bold prediction that many foods deemed unhealthy will be banned. ---mandatory gym memberships with dues payable to the US Govt. ---gov't run grocery stores that will only have food that hasn't been processed. ---fast food/ restaurants will be banned unless they prepare whole foods only ---bakeries: banned ---candy: banned And long before all of this, everyone will be required to get an RFID implant. inevitably the gov't will try to micromanage all businesses and the general population. It won't happen overnight but little by little. It's already happening.-5

Tatarewicz: @Brian...Not as far-fetched as this sounds; it's how bureaucrats ensure growth in their sinecure positions.
