Title: How to install Google Earth in Linux with one command

Google Earth had quit working on my computer (pclinuxos, kde64, fully updated). And it was no longer in the repository. I had deleted it but wanted to try again to see if I could make it work. I found the following, tried it and, so far anyway, it is working.

Just go to terminal, paste this command and press enter and it will download and install it for you:

wget http://dl.google.com/earth/client/current/GoogleEarthLinux.bin && chmod +x GoogleEarthLinux.bin && ./GoogleEarthLinux.bin

It can't get any easier.

I guess the person who wrote it is assuming that everyone knows how to open a terminal and know how to go to "root" (which is easy but if no one has done it before it can all seem pretty daunting).

Now I don't guarantee that this will work for anyone and everyone who might want to try it. All I can say is that it works for me. Now watch it crash next time I boot up, lol!

Well, it sorta works. It did download and install but when I try to go to an actual known location I get this:

invalid HTTP request

Anyone have any suggestions or ideas on how to fix that?

Here's a download site from goog to check, it claims all platforms supported -

Thanks Lod. I can delete the one I have now, try the one you linked to and if it works, wonderful. If not I still have the command to get the one I am trying to use now. Appreciate the help.

You don't have to install the Chrome browser, although recently I've read good reviews of it...good luck.

Oh, I already have it but rarely use it. Still using Firefox.

And I lied to you without meaning to. I figured that deleting the version of google earth I downloaded from the command line would be just as easy to delete. But since it is no longer in the repository that pclos uses I can't find any way (yet) to delete it.

Check out wikimapia.org. It doesn't have the street level view, but I like it because it highlights the neighborhoods when you hover over them, and provides a narrative when you click on them. I spent a couple hours there, but I am a map freak.

Find 370.

Thanks, the world.

LOL, I don't think it's that good. Besides, I am having too much fun witnessing the chimpout unfolding across the street.

I hear you. I saw a foreclosure place listed for 43 I wish I had snapped up, it would have been 200K in Indy, even in a "diverse" neighborhood.

Idiot bluegum across the street just threw a bag of clothes all across their yard, cops have been here three times today. I keep wondering why they don't call Animal Control, get the guys out here with the poles with rope loops at the end.

Thanks Dak! I checked out that wikimapia thing, got the street coordinates of a known address and plugged that into the "fly to" search on the google earth I downloaded earlier and it worked! Apparently it has some kind of issue when you just try to enter the regular address but if you plug in the coordinates it's "good to go."

Lod, I had tried before with that one you linked for me and it didn't work at all for me. I forgot about that.

Glad you liked it and it worked for you. The neighborhood grouping was my favorite feature, until I looked up my old stomping grounds:

Indian Heights: Indian heights is a Kokomo suburb that is known for its obfuscated roadways, cheaply built homes and proliferation of children running in the streets.

But hell, I thought, that's pretty accurate! :)

It worked to help me with coordinates to make google earth work. I have been having a LOT of problems with it, so bad that I deleted it for a long time. Only lately have I wanted to try it again to see if I could use it or not.

Since I do my level best to stay in 78731, and don't care to search for 370, I have little need for mapping the globe.

If it's really interesting, I figger that it will show up here soon enough.
