In a north London hospital, scientists are growing noses, ears and blood vessels in the laboratory in a bold attempt to make body parts using stem cells. It is among several labs around the world, including in the U.S., that are working on the futuristic idea of growing custom-made organs in the lab. While only a handful of patients have received the British lab-made organs so far including tear ducts, blood vessels and windpipes researchers hope they will soon be able to transplant more types of body parts into patients, including what would be the world's first nose made partly from stem cells. "It's like making a cake," said Alexander Seifalian at University College London, the scientist leading the effort. "We just use a different kind of oven." Poster Comment: jermellt Replacing an entire brain neuronically will never happen.... repairing it maybe possible with stem cells. But once you loose memories they aren't recoverable because the tissue is damaged or disconnected. Once you loose an impulse that is it. That memory is gone forever. As far as memory being transplanted....That would years down the road and they would have to figure out the specific synapses that create and control memory and how they are formed and coincide with reflex and interaction. You are looking at no less than 100 more years if not 200-300. The only thing that has more memory than the human brain in algorthimic activity is the NSA storage and even that is extreme. Why because the human interacts with memory 24/7 with the mathematical calculations that it takes to make movement genome codes growth hormones that are so complex it took 1000s of years for humans to do research and figure out themselves and still haven't figured it out and broken the codes yet. So imagine the amount of information your body stores genetically if it takes centuries to figure out just partial information techinically jermellt As far as replacement parts and organs yes that is very much feasible in the near future if not readily available now to a high bidder. To regrow parts of your body which are badly needing replacement is regeneration therapy and rejuvenation with stem cells. meaning that beside your brain your body is entirely renewable. If they can manipulate your cells to recover in your prime that would border line your DNA indefinitely. You could live thousands of years technically renew your genome code bone structure mix and realign DNA .....But when you do that.... The value of human life shall drop as well. Stem cells and the genome for aging are factors in this equation. They are already using DNA from the that ages backwards and reverse to figure out how it lives for so long Chicopee Teeth growth is the research to follow. Three years ago my dentist said that teeth were grown in lab, however, the researchers could not control the direction of growth, so let's hope a solution is at hand. [DavidK] A woman goes to her doctor and says she wants an operation because her #$%$ lips are much too large. She asks the doctor to keep the operation a secret as she is embarrassed and does not want anyone to find out. The doctor agrees. She wakes up from the operation and finds three roses carefully placed on her nightstand. Outraged, she immediately calls the doctor and says " I told you not to tell anyone!" The doctor replies, "Don't worry, I didn't tell a soul!" When the woman inquires about the roses the doctor says, "Oh, those! The first rose is from me. I felt bad because you went through this all by yourself. The second rose is from my nurse. She assisted me with your operation and has been through this procedure herself, so she understands what you're going through. And the third rose is from the guy upstairs in the burn unit. He wanted to thank you for his new ears." +11 Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
