STOCKHOLM, April 7 (Xinhua) -- The Swedish home appliance maker Electrolux has recently initiated a global research "the Invironment Project" using vacuum cleaners to investigate what indoor pollution looks like in consumers' homes around the world.

Dust from different cities over the world with various pollution issues was collected and then analyzed by researcher from the Swedish University of Agricultural Science, using an elemental detector that could identify un-organic particles amongst the dust, said the company in a statement.

What were found in the dust bags ranged from unexpected findings, such as bismuth traces and hunting projectiles, to common materials like plastic and concrete.

"Seeing is believing and we aim to turn what's invisible at home visible. 90 percent of our time is spent indoors and therefore the 'invironment' is just as important to consider as the environment," said Cecilia Nord, Director within Electrolux Sustainability Affairs.

"Indoor environment is at the core of our business and real life testing also generates insights of what is demanded from future generation of vacuum cleaners," Nord added.

A general conclusion is that the indoor environment is dependent on context, both the immediate surroundings and factors such as proximity to traffic or local climate conditions.

But the most significant finding is perhaps that indoor environment is greatly affected by people's habits, preferences, activities and personal possessions determine the inside of the dust bag, which in other words is that the dust bag tells the truth about one's living habits and one's lifestyle.

Suggestions on how to improve "environment" are for example to vent when raining, get plants, take off shoes when getting home, vacuum more often and to pay attention to one's lifestyle. Editor: Yang Lina

Poster Comment:

Best device for removing fine particles from indoor air is an electronic air cleaner, if you don't mind the ozone.
