Title: This Swimmer Noticed A Shark Was Following Him; The Dolphins Noticed, Too

A group of dolphins apparently came to the aid of a British long-distance swimmer just in the nick of time.

Adam Walker was on a 16-mile swim in the choppy waters of New Zealand's Cook Strait on April 22 when he spotted a great white shark beneath him, Yahoo! News reports. A pod of 10 dolphins quickly surrounded him and stayed by his side until the shark swam off.

Walker posted images of his guardian dolphins on Facebook a day after the rigorous swim. "I'd like to think they were protecting me and guiding me home!!!" he wrote of his brief time with the dolphins. Post by Ocean Walker.

Walker, who was swimming to raise proceeds for the nonprofit Whale and Dolphin Conservation, embarked on the Cook Strait swim as part of the Ocean's Seven, a global challenge to complete seven long-distance swims. He crossed the Cook Strait in 8 hours and 36 minutes.

Walker is already most of the way through the Ocean's Seven challenge, having previously completed swims across the English Channel, Strait of Gibraltar, Molokai Channel, Catalina Channel and Tsugaru Channel. His final swim will be in August, when he will attempt to swim the North Channel, which separates Northern Ireland from Scotland.

Poster Comment:

That was good telepathic communication between Walker and the dolphins.

The dolphins may have been protecting him and dolphins can kill sharks. However, more likely than not the shark would not have attacked him as they tend to not be attracted to humans and prefer fish. Nevertheless, sometimes they do attack humans and at least give a severe bite to taste a human to see if they are tasty.

It saddens me to think of dolphins and other marine mammals drowning in junk gill and bottom drag nets.

And, their wide selection of environmental poisons, Corexit in the Gulf of Mexico, radioactive waste in the Pacific Rim and low O2 levels in the cold North Atlantic may result in the creatures begging at the gates of SEA WORLD for shelter from the storm.

And, no matter where they huddle they'll likely eat some contaminated sea life. And, once any link in the food chain is destroyed or even critically reduced then it's game ball for Atlas.

I've read they ram them until they die.

it saddens and sickens me.

To question is to value the ideal of truth more highly than the loyalties to nation, religion, race, or ideology.

it saddens and sickens me.

I know it does, sweetness.

Bottle nose, spotted and other dolphins have been known to "play ruff" with divers and recreational splashers, and it seems to correlate with periods of sexual excitement. (Boy dolphins proudly display banana boners when they're "swimming around the cape of good horn").

Despite their intelligence they may not understand how much ramming power they have and how easily they can seriously injure or even kill a humy bean when they push ribs through vitals.

But this occasional character flaw aside I admire these critters, especially when they're credited with saving shark bait swimmers and scuttled vessel survivors.

And the thought of these and other mammals drowning from entanglement with the endless junk littering the seas is enough to give me nightmares.
