AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - A small town Texas police officer responding to an emergency call about a female with a gun has been suspended for shooting dead a 93-year-old woman in her home, authorities said on Thursday.

Hearne police officer Stephen Stem fatally shot Pearlie Golden, who was brandishing a firearm, the Robertson County District Attorney's Office said in a statement.

"Officer Stem engaged the elderly female asking her to put down the weapon and then ultimately fired his own sidearm wounding Miss Golden, who later died at St. Joseph's Hospital," the statement said.

The Texas Rangers have been called in to investigate the incident in the central Texas town of Hearne. Hearne has a population of about 4,500 and is about 90 miles northeast of Austin.

The same officer was placed on leave about a year ago for shooting dead a suspect when responding to a call of an unruly crowd gathering in an apartment complex parking lot, The Eagle newspaper of Bryan-College Station reported.

She became "agitated" when her son took her car key.

Son dialed 911.

Mom's dead.

Son dialed 911.

When are people going to stop "dialing 911" for every little thing that bothers them? Shit like this is what happens EVERY time the cops come around, they have a LICENSE to shoot dogs and people.

Other than a medical emergency, I can't imagine making the call.

HEARNE (AP) — Officials in a small Central Texas town have decided to fire a police officer who shot and killed an armed 93-year-old woman during a confrontation at her home.

The city council unanimously voted Saturday to fire Officer Stephen Stem, who shot and killed Pearlie Golden on Tuesday, KBTX-TV reports. The vote took less than 30 minutes.

Hearne Mayor Ruben Gomez had told demonstrators he would recommend Stem’s dismissal.

Texas Rangers are investigating the shooting.

Golden’s nephew, Roy Jones, told KBTX-TV on Friday that his aunt became upset when she was denied a driver’s license renewal, and she armed herself.

Jones says he called 911 and his aunt fired two shots before the officer shot her.

Stem’s attorney has said his client’s actions were justified.

She became "agitated" when her son took her car key.

She also discharged a .32 twice - albeit into the ground - in the presence of an armed police officer.

This story will get some air time because it plays into the hands of those that preach that some of us shouldn't have access to guns.

I would have said, "Hey lady, put the gun down and I'll let you drive my police car to McDonalds to get some ice cream."

If it'd been you, Turtle, you'd no doubt have had the situation in hand.
