ScienceAlert In need of a good night sleep? That glass of warm milk with honey won't help, instead try drinking tart cherry juice. Seven volunteers aged 68 and older who suffered from insomnia drank 236 mL (8 oz) of the juice two times a day for two weeks; then, they went through a two-week washout period, and later were given placebos for another two weeks. When the researchers analysed the results, they discovered that drinking tart cherry juice in the morning and at night helped volunteers sleep an extra hour each night. Lack of sleep has been linked to chronic pain and high blood pressure; it also increases the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Tart cherries, Montmorency tart cherries in particular, which were the ones used in this study, are a natural source of melatonin – also known as the hormone of darkness because it helps to regulate our sleep-wake cycle. This explains why the juice can work as well as sleeping pills for some people. These cherries, on the other hand, also contain proanthocyanidins, a compound that helps to increase the presence of the aminoacid tryptophan, a precursor of serotonin, a brain chemical that play a huge role in the modulation of sleep. "Even though the amount of tryptophan in tart cherry juice is smaller than a normal dose given to aid sleep, the compounds in tart cherries could prevent the tryptophan from breaking down so it's able to work in the body more effectively," Greenway explained in a news release. "These compounds may help to improve tryptophan bioavailability for serotonin synthesis, which could have a positive effect on sleep.
