How liberal has higher education become? Butler University in Indiana is now excluding white students from receiving scholarships.
The schools $2.4 million endowment now excludes applications from Caucasians, especially males.
Butler will now only award scholarships to African-American students, female student of Hispanic descent, and women of Indian descent, the school announced. Preference will be given to Caucasian undergraduates enrolled in the College of Business.
Roger Clegg, who worked in both the Reagan and Bush administrations said because Butler is a private institution, it can exclude whomever it chooses.
If the university is involved, either in funding the scholarship or in choosing the recipient, then I think that you would have a hard time justifying a scholarship that is racially exclusive, Clegg said.
