Agreed. Many were chased away with rude behavior and turned this forum into an echo chamber. Some deserved it but still...
I joined FR in about 2000. Jog my memory about the ads.
I joined in late 1998. I remember the ad. It was George Washington with a tear in his eye. If I'm wrong, I'm sure someone will correct me. I may have donated to it, but won't swear to that.
I was in back then, but, I don't remember the ad...my bad.
Here is copy of first ad, the second was of the Indian crying. Second one we were short a thousand or so, The Times said dont worry we will publish it and they did. http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2644890/posts

The years have flashed by in the blinking of an eye, and so many of our friends are not with us any longer. I don't know if they are not able to join us for whatever reason(s), or just don't care to discuss the topics that engage us here today...
