Kevin Lomax, a defense attorney in Gainesville, Florida, has never lost a case. He defends a schoolteacher, Gettys, against a charge of child molestation. During the trial, Kevin realizes that his client is guilty, and a reporter tells him that a guilty verdict is all but inevitable. However, through a harsh cross-examination Kevin destroys the credibility of the victim, Barbara, and secures another not guilty verdict.

As he celebrates, Kevin is approached by a representative of the New York law firm Milton, Chadwick & Waters, who offers him a large sum of money to help the firm with a jury selection. After Kevin’s jury delivers a not guilty verdict, John Milton offers him a large salary and a swanky apartment if he joins the firm. Despite warnings from his Evangelical Christian mother, Alice, about sinful big city life, Kevin accepts the job and moves with his wife Mary Ann to Manhattan.

It's a rather heavy movie to watch. A flawless lawyer is put to the ultimate test of principles. How far will he go, and what personal cost will he pay to win a case where he knows his client is guilty? One scene in particular could be considered blasphemous for those with conservative religious inclinations, and it does play off of the Biblical book of Revelations to an extent. But what would you expect from the devil?

I don't know that there's any real moral that one could take away from the movie. It's heavy drama and one movie you remember.

I haven't seen it and there is not much reason to since the premise is garbage. Criminal trials are Star Chambers where conviction of the innocent is almost guaranteed. The courts preselect the jury pool and eliminate those that might not vote to convict and likely they place a couple of their own on the jury to guarantee a guilty verdict or hung trial. And, just like in the Martha Stewart trial, if there are a couple of hold outs for voting not guilty, the judge will replace them.

The judge working for the prosecution prevents most evidence favorable to the defense and allows introduction of anything desired by the prosecutor. For example defense witnesses must rely on memory but witness for the prosecution are allow to read from prepared statements.

I've seen it a couple of times while being bored, not sure I agree with that 100%.

At the very end of the movie Al Pacino, who plays the Devil himself, changes into a reporter I think it is, to entice Reeves' character into further being used as he was originally after having been lured by money/career-success while having had unspeakable things happen to his wife, the likes of which really didn't need to be shown in the movie rendering it to what I consider to be filth as a result. She eventually commits suicide.

Where I disagree is in your last statement.

The one thing that I have taken away from that movie was that most people are always willing to sell their integrity or some other aspect of their "soul" in order to get something of earthly value.

I see this as a very real and common theme throughout our society, practically at all levels, even here within this forum.

Excuses are almost always made and rationalizations almost always used by people to be able to partake of some anti-Christian/immoral position or benefit that society offers, from so-called "christian" churches, to organizations, to individuals, and certainly as societal institutions ensconced within our anti-Christian societies around the globe.

Few and far between are those that absolutely refuse to participate at any level regardless of the circumstances.

That's essentially what I took away as the moral of the movie. I'm not sure that it was meant to have been painted as coming from that angle, but Pacino movies, like "... and Justice for All," "Serpico," "Scarface," etc., all seem to have some significant moral component.

At the end of the movie, the "cognizant" Reeves' character is persuaded not by money/wealth/success this time, and after having morally realized what his lust for those has done, rather he's then subsequently enticed by fame, fame associated with having made a good "moral" decision.

In short, and if I had to sum up, most people's "morality" can be bought with something.

The movie is about, at its core, how vanity is the premise for much, what I'll term, voluntary sin. Vanity, predicated upon pride, can be researched in Scripture.

To question is to value the ideal of truth more highly than the loyalties to nation, religion, race, or ideology.
