The mainstream media finally got something right about nutrition...

I've been happy to see an increased coverage of just how bad America's sugar addiction has been. Obesity, diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer's — more and more studies coming out are showing us that our growing sugar consumption has contributed to rises in some of the most debilitating lifestyle diseases out there.

While the prospect of these diseases has been enough to get many people to kick their sugar habits, for many more of us our addiction to the sweet white powder has proven to be too strong to make this cut off easy.

The fact is, sugar has become such a part of your daily life that it tempts you no matter where you go — from birthday cakes at the office to a cooler full of Pepsi at your family reunion — it will continue to tempt you with all its might...

In fact, some studies have shown that sugar addicition is at least as hard to kick than cocaine.

So unless you come to this battle with a little bit of knowledge and preparation, that is. Advertisement

The #1 WORST Food for Weight Loss

Most people think it's fatty foods — but they're dead wrong.

It's a food that hides in almost everything you eat...

And it's solely responsible for making you — and the majority of Americans — overweight.

To find out more about this food and how you can avoid it, click here.

If you prepare yourself for the times at which you'll be most tempted to give in to the sugar addiction, then there will be no internal dilemma — you will know how to act, and you will do so decisively.

As the great Chinese war philosopher Sun Tzu once said, “The greatest victory is that which requires no battle.”

If you set yourself up so you don't face a battle with sugar, you will be guaranteed a victory against it. Here are five easy ways you can do that right now:

1) Soda water is your best friend.

I actually learned this one from one of Dr. Colin Champ's podcasts. He was talking about his Coca-Cola addiction in college and how much damage it was doing to his health.

He broke the habit with a healthy alternative. He craved the carbonation that soda provided, but not the sugar — so he started drinking ice-cold carbonated water instead. To spice it up a bit, he added some lemon juice.

A lot of the time, breaking a habit can be difficult — so instead of trying to break it, we substitute the object of our action with something else that's healthier. In this case, we're not trying to break whatever behavior causes you to crave a soda. Instead, we're switching the object of your craving from dangerous sugar to a healthier soda water with lemon juice.

2) Like your coffee sweet? Try Truvia.

There's two types of coffee drinkers out there — those who drink it because they like the taste, and those who think it tastes like crap but need the caffeine.

If you fall into the second group, then you're probably dumping loads of sugar or artificial sweeteners into your morning cup of joe.

Neither one of these things is healthy — artificial sweeteners are often no more effective than sugar at preventing weight loss, and a lot of them have been shown to do some pretty nasty things to mice in experiments measuring their health effects.

There are, however, a few natural low-calorie sweetener options out there. The one I've found to be most like sugar is Truvia, which is a mixture of stevia plant extract and the sugar alcohol erythritol (which is found in fruits and some fermented foods).

One or two packets of this stuff in your coffee and you won't even know you just sweetened your drink with a very low-calorie sweetener.

3) Need something sweet for breakfast? Try making your own fruit yogurt.

The hardest thing for me in getting off a high-sugar diet was cutting out cereal. I was the biggest eater of Cinnamon Toast Crunch you ever met until I realized just what it was doing to my waistline. I would be hungry again less than an hour later and end up stuffing my face with more cereal.

That's when I made the switch to yogurt — but there was one big problem...

Almost all the yogurt out there was low-fat yogurt, which wouldn't do anything to keep away food cravings or keep my stomach feeling satisfied. Not to mention the fact that almost all the low-fat yogurt was loaded with tons of sugar. I looked into the few brands of full-fat yogurt out there, but they only had plain, nothing with any flavor to it.

So I took matters into my own hands. I crushed up a few blueberries and tossed them into my yogurt. And it was amazing. You can do that with just about any fruit, but I've found that berries and bananas work best. You'll get all the natural sweetness that comes with fruit, but with many more nutrients than you'll find in sugar, and much less of a weight-gain response. Advertisement

Is your sugar addiction making you fat?

Are you tired of the lethargy, brain fog, and weight gain caused by a sugar heavy diet?

If you have trouble kicking sugar from your diet, I have news for you:

It's not your fault...

Science has shown that sugar uses the same addiction pathways in the brain as heroin and cocaine.

But now there's hope in the 21-Day Sugar Detox program...

In as little as 3 weeks you can kick your sugar addiction — and your extra weight — to the curb.

To find out more, simply click here.

4) Snack wisely: Trail mix done right.

It's going to happen eventually: someone brings donuts into the office and you feel that sweet tooth kicking in...

No matter how much you try to keep sugar out of your life, there will always be other people who just can't comprehend that. They'll continue to press their sugary poison on you no matter how much you protest.

Instead of giving in, you can tell them you just ate — and then before you think anymore about those free donuts, you pull out your trail mix and down a handful of it before your mouth has time to drool.

The content of the trail mix is crucial. A lot of the ones you'll find in the grocery store contain candy and other forms of added sugar — stay away from those.

You'll want one (either store-bought or homemade) that's full of different kinds of nuts with a bit of dried fruit tossed in there as well. The fat and protein in the nuts will fill your stomach without a calorie overload, while the fruit will help put a stop to your craving for sweets.

5) You're new go-to dessert: fruit, fruit, and more fruit.

Yes, you'll get stares. I was eating lunch with my extended family over the weekend at a nice French restaurant down the street from me.

When the waiter plopped down the dessert menu, groans were heard as people anticipated the rich chocolate volcanoes and tri-flavored ice cream that they were about to order.

So of course I got stares when I asked the waiter for a bowl of fruit.

“Are you on a diet or something?”

“Come on Ken, indulge, it's the weekend!”

It's a sad state of society when we're expected to gorge ourselves on sugar -- especially after a rich meal.

I know any defense for health reasons would be perceived as an insult to their willpower...

So I don't tell them that I'm loading up on vitamins A, C, E, and minerals like potassium, phosphorus, and magnesium with my apples, berries, and bananas.

I don't tell them that I don't want to feel like crap an hour later as my insulin levels drop from the blood sugar spike and I get tired and hungry again for a few minutes of addictive pleasure.

As simple and as silly as it sounds, I just smile at them and say “No thanks, I'm just really craving a juicy slice of kiwi today.”

Which is true: the more fruit and fewer sugary desserts you eat, the easier it will be for you, too, to pick fruit over Big Sugar's white gold.

With these five tips you are now prepared to begin your fight against one of the most dangerous and addictive substances in the world.
