The memo with his name went out to 6,000 "journalists". I can't find out who it was. It's hard to believe that 6,000 "journalists" can keep their mouth shut when it comes to closing ranks around Obama (rolls eyes). Has anybody seen the name??

Are you insinuating that this is a phony crisis?

Actually, it's the first time in living memory that hardcore leftist "journalists", 6,000 of 'em, resisted the urge to out a CIA operative. Especially when the White House blurted out his name in a press release. In the past those people couldn't wait to shout out a name and then hide behind "My First Amendment right!!". Funny how that works when it's one of their own stinking up the Oval Office......

Don't forget that various executive orders, the Patriot Act, the NDAA, FISA, and more state that you can't divulge details of an ongoing investigation even when it's of yourself. The press on the ground has got to be scared. That and their bosses will tell them to avoid certain topics altogether. Better put: if they have to be told, they're already in hot water.

That's a very interesting point. Valerie Plame's name was all over the world. Now this is really going to bug me!

Lorie,

I found this report just noodling around.

It puts some perspective on the topic.

Departed CIA Station Chief's Name Exposed -- Ho Hum (corrected)

The name of the CIA’s former station chief in Kabul surfaced on Monday.

Ho-hum.

Gregory Vogel’s name, even his face, has been an open secret for years among people who really count, which is to say, his allies and enemies alike in Afghanistan.

On the allies side of the ledger are scores of U.S. and foreign reporters who have been on the intelligence beat and/or covering the Afghanistan war since 2001, when Vogel first landed in Kabul.

Indeed, he's a legend among Afghan officials for saving President Karzai’s life. He’s on his second tour did two tours as station chief.

More to the point, a score more Afghan military, police and intelligence figures know knew Vogel on sight. That includes the Taliban's spies.

Why, the CIA’s cover in Kabul is so thin that, when gunfire broke out at downtown building last September, the news bulletins fairly screamed, “CIA Station in Kabul Under Attack.”

It’s hard to imagine the situation changing much since then. There’s just nowhere for an American to hide for long in that country.

Quick story: When I arrived on duty at a supposedly secret “safe house” in Vietnam years back, the first thing I asked about was security. My teammates laughed. The Green Berets had captured a communist map with a big X on our place six months ago, they said. Nothing had been done. I moved elsewhere as soon as I could.

Plus ça change. The Taliban probably watched the CIA move into its safe house a decade ago. They know who the station chief is. They’ve probably got a thick scrap book of CIA faces.

Having throughly infiltrated Afghanistan’s army and police forces, the Taliban are able to watch us, up close and personal, pretty much all the time.

In Dec. 2009, for just that reason, the CIA’s base chief in Khost, Jennifer Matthews, broke all security protocol and ordered an important informant be brought through the gates without being patted down.

Turned out he was a double agent. He blew himself up, taking Matthews and half dozen other bright and dedicated people with him. That's tragedy.

CIA higher-ups, so pathologically upset about their dirty laundry slipping into reporters’ hands, evaded accountability.
