Former Guantanamo Bay detainee Moazzam Begg is one of four people arrested on suspicion of Syria-related terrorism offences. But police stress that confirming his name does not imply guilt.Sign up for Snowmail, your daily preview of what is on Channel 4 News, sent straight to your inbox, here: http://mailing.channel4.com/public/sn...

Just for some insight into how Gitmo continues to rile up foreigners as we allow our "holier than thou" values to be compromised again and again in the name of security.

To get an idea how well-spoken he is

Of course Begg's well spoken - he's the son of a bank manager; he was born in Britain, has a university degree, and has written a book. Begg isn't your typical Taliban guy who uses human skulls to play soccer.

Look holding POWs ( or whatever they're called) without habeas corpus and without having formal trials is against our Western tradition of law and justice. I get that. But these Gitmo prisoners do get to have their cases heard by military tribunals and they also get US taxpayer furnished legal counsel. Military tribunals are a heck of a lot fairer than what one of our soldiers would get if captured in Afghanistan ( apart from Sgt Bergdahl, of course). The population of Gitmo has gone down from approx 660 people to 134 as of May'14, so many of them have been freed. Some of them did not want to be freed because they didn't to go home and human rights groups supported their requests to stay at Gitmo. Go figure. Some of these guys were indeed - cover your ears! - bad guys - not all Gitmo prisoners were innocent, upstanding citizens, pure as driven snow - so they knew that if they were sent home, their own governments or their own neighbors or their own families would kill them.

It's a complicated issue. You can beat your chest as much as you want about the injustice of Gitmo and how its enraging Muslims further BUT Gitmo and its 134 prisoners are the least of our problems when it comes to alienating Muslims.

If we had shut down Gitmo 5 years ago, 10 years ago - if we had never established Gitmo, America would still be hated by some Muslims.

It's because of our ME foreign policy that some Muslims are radicalized. Gitmo is a small drop in the ocean of anger comparatively speaking. Afghanistan is a special unto itself because as much Afghan tribes hate each other, they hate foreign invaders more.

The best book I read on the subject of US foreign policy and Islamic radicalization was one written by Michael Scheuer ( former CIA chief in charge of the Bin Laden unit) and published in 2004 after the Afghanistan invasion. It was called "Imperial Hubris" - short and to the point. Well worth the read. It really put everything in context for me. Here's a wiki summary:

I've always thought Gitmo to be an Israeli tactic, as is our position not to negotiate with terrorists. I think we all can agree Gitmo never should have been opened and I have no problem negotiating w/terrorists since we have declared war on them.

With Bergdahl, however, I'm not considering the Gitmo equation at all. I'm irritated by the Rose Garden publicity stunt the Kenyan tried to pull off followed by rolling out a damaged Susan Rice to announce the homecoming of a true American hero. As the facts come in, the story is collapsing yet our arrogant emperor pushes forward. Just barf...

NO doubt...... One would think attempting to join the French foreign legion would be an automatic disqualifier for US service... But the Gum chewing homo in chief lets anyone in.

I'm hearing "impeach Obama" from people who wouldn't normally be so restive. People who probably voted for the oaf.

I don't find anything to cheer about here. More pendulum swings. More "other party now!" sentiment. More false hope. The thing that irks me is he should have been impeached for his first unconstitutional executive signing order or failing to close Gitmo, or failing to leave Iraq on a decent timetable, or anything Eric Holder has done on every day he's been at work.

But no. It's this Bergdahl dissident. My fellow Americans are so fickle and daffy.
