The irony is that the phrase "it can't happen here" (often used with much sarcasm) is a leftist phrase meant to remind Americans that fascism could happen here, and that populists like Huey Long and Father Coughlin were fine examples. Henry Ford was included. So was Joe McCarthy, although his identification of communist sympathizers was usually dead on. He was associated with fascism because he was so doggone anti-communist, and because he had few scruples in fighting it. Considering communism as a positive ideology in its pure, Engles-Marxist-Hegelian sense became a victimless "thought crime" to the left. So in the 1950s, it was happening here especially since so many identified as communist sympathizers were Jewish. The left still maintains that the Rosenbergs were unjustly accused and were persecuted for being Jewish. To get an idea who or what might be gripping one's country, just look for what is forbidden to criticize. A further irony is that the intelligence state built up to combat communist infiltration is now used to protect the power of a federal government gone well beyond its constitutional limits. The pro-liberty camp should be very careful how it throws these terms around lest they find themselves painted into a corner. The sarcastic notion of "it can't happen here" could be applied to anti-Zionists as well as anti-communists. The other problem with using these hot propagandist terms is that they can help perpetuate the very conditions the liberty movement should be resisting. A controlled opposition might prefer to use double-edged propaganda terms for this very reason.
