Title: The BEST gun for home-defense?

Dear Patriot,

Choosing a gun for home defense is one of the most serious decisions you may ever have to make, especially in the event that you need to use it...

Most experts have their own prejudices, based mostly on their own training or background. They assume that you will have a similar background. My approach is different. I strive to assume nothing.

That's exactly why I have no qualms about recommending a very specific type of home defense weapon.

From the Blog:

"In most movies with climactic home defense scenes, the hero usually carries a semi-auto pistol or a Dirty Harry style .357 revolver.

There are two reasons for this: 1.) Hollywood movie producers know next to nothing about guns.

2.) These shootout scenes wouldn’t last nearly as long if the hero was armed with a pump shotgun.

To drag a shootout scene out for maximum cinematic effect, many shots must be fired -- and the vast majority of them need to be misses..."

Poster Comment:

Best home defense weapon is a shotgun loaded with 00 Buck for the first round, and a slug for the 2nd. If you miss on the first, or there are more than one intruders, you need a slug to go thru any furniture they might get behind. ;)

The best gun for home defense (or self defense for that matter) is the one you can get to when you need it.

The "Best" gun for home-defense is one that reliably goes "BANG!" when you pull the trigger.

I change weapons off, but this FN 57 with a 30 round clip is currently sitting in my bedside night table.

Many arms reviewers rate the FiveSeveN as the finest defensive sidearm out there.

No argument here.

I've never owned a handgun like this. It has only the slightest kick which allows me to hit a frying pan size grouping at 50 yards. The extended mag - 20 rounds to 30 rounds - allows it to lay down some serious firepower. It's worth every penny.

I'd recommend for those on a budget a Remington pump shotgun with two barrels: for home-defense, use a (legally) short slug-capable barrel with three 00-buck cartridges, and two slugs. Keep a-box of 00-buck nearby for emergencies. Lock its trigger if required but keep the key readily available.

Buy a second barrel and stock up on birding rounds in order to be able to hunt all kinds of game with it.

This is an affordable, safe, versatile addition to the home that won't break any laws in any of the 50 states (to my knowledge; check your local ordinances) and could save your bacon just by the sound of you racking it.

By the time I rack it I expect they'll be dead or deaf. Very sound choice.

I looked at an FN in 5.7. Way out of my budget. Went with an EAA Witness in .40. At 25' my groupings are two inches or less. 17+1 gives me enough rounds to deal with what I may run into. For home defense I recommend a saiga 12gauge. Reliability and minimal recoil. Magazine fed means fast reload if you have to.

Mag-feed shotguns aren't always legal across the country (to my knowledge) and (may) be more likely to jam than conventional pump feeders.

Two guys were in a bar. They got into an argument. One of them said, "Let's go outside." The other guy said, "OK."

When they got outside, the first guy said, "I know Chung Mu Kwan." The other guy said, "Yeah? I know Ching Ching."

The first guy says, "Ching Ching? What's Ching Ching?"

The seconD guy reaches behind his back and pulls out a pistol. "Ching Ching!" ROTFLMAO!

Beautiful!

Your S&W looks a lot like my stainless Taurus 8-shot revolver for which I traded an Air-Lite just to get the extra capacity.

Wonderful tools, that I hope never to employ.

That 686 is a $829 pistol right now, I paid something like $300 for it in 2000, came with original box, original wood grips, full can of cop reloads (Houston cop trade-in when they went to semi-auto's). Best deal I ever came across, and I did it through a 'gun wanted' ad in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram!!

"Taurus" is just another way of saying "Smith & Wesson" for the most part, a lot of their pistols are made on retired/surplus S&W machinery.

FN 57 with a 30 round clip

That's the top-dog as far as practical pistols go, you just can't improve on what it brings to the table.

Didn't know that - thanks.

The first Taurus I fired was christine's 9-shot(?) stainless .22 revolver...really, really sweet, tight action, light smooth trigger - a quality sidearm.

Sweet.

That's what my brother has on the console of his pick'em up truck. He keeps it covered with a red shop rag.

Not totally "legal" here, but, wtf.
