Voice of Russia... A chain reaction is expected to be launched Thursday in a new-generation reactor at Russia's Beloyarskaya nuclear power plant.
The plant's specialists will initiate a controlled chain reaction in the BN-800 reactor of the plant's fourth unit, Rosatom Deputy General Director Alexander Lokshin said at a conference on Thursday, marking 60 years of nuclear power engineering.
The BN-800 or sodium-cooled fast-neutron reactor, dubbed a "reactor of the future", with an 880 megawatt power generating capacity uses the closed nuclear fuel cycle technology that minimizes nuclear waste and significantly widens the range of elements that can be used as nuclear fuel.
Russia holds the lead in this technology.
