This time neither for conflicts related to the split of Yugoslavia, a Communist Utopia that proved that nations transcend countries, nor the starting of a new World War. On June 28, 2014, the city will host a commemoration to the two shots that changed the European map. Bosnian Serb Gavrilo Princip fired twice into an open-topped car, killing Franz Ferdinand heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and his wife, starting World War I. Sarajevo Memorial on the shooting spot in Sarajevo The History of the German Templer Settlement of Sarona in Palestine 1871-1947 One of the strangest disclosures on the topic belongs to Hebrew media. On June 27, the Hebrew version of Haaretz published an article entitled "To the Jewish Warriors of WWI, with Recognition, from Hitler." For the second time within one year, Israel is rewriting Nazi history, admitting a wild exaggeration in Jewish and Western reports from the Third Reich period. Germans in the Holy Land Modernization of the Holy Land was not initiated by the Jews. Neither the British nor the Ottomans started it. The German Templers established a modern transport system and mail services. They started the export of Jaffa Oranges,* a brand identified now with Israel. Since 1868, they settled in the Holy Land. German Colony neighborhoods appeared also in Jaffa and Jerusalem. North of Jaffa, Sarona was at what now is the Kirya, where the Ministry of Defense and the IDF General Headquarters are. Germany and the Ottoman Empire were allies. Until WW1, the German colonies in the Holy land were successful. After the conquest by the British Empire, they started to dwindle with their members returning to Germany or moving to Australia. Since the creation of Israel, their properties are being cared by other churches. The German Colonies were never ethnically pure enclaves. Palestinian and Jews who could afford the better German constructed houses, joined the neighbors that adapted German building designs to the Middle Eastern climate. Later on, German architects designed Tel Aviv's White City, nowadays a World Cultural Heritage Site.$ In this complex reality, the Third Reich was not surprised by his former soldiers enjoying Jaffa Oranges under the rule of the British Mandate. Israel: "Warsaw Ghetto a Myth" Jews in the German Army Months after Israel acknowledged that the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising was a myth created around a minor incident (see New Year, New History. Israel: "Warsaw Ghetto a Myth."), it has disclosed that the relations between the Third Reich and its Jewish citizens were not as demonic as it likes to portray. The abovementioned article describes relations between the Third Reich and some of its Jewish citizens that contradict propagandistic textbooks and Western media reports since the end of WWII. During WWI, roughly 100,000 German Jews served in the German Army. The Third Reich awarded medals of honor to some of these German Jews. Hermann Bendheim was born in 1899, in southwestern Germany. In 1914, he volunteered to the German Army. He served as an artillery soldier handling "Fat Berta" cannons against the French and was awarded the Honor Cross. His mother served in the same period in the German Red Cross; also she was awarded a medal due to her devoted service. After the war, he studied engineering and worked in German porcelain industry. In 1933, he was fired due to "Political changes and workforce policies derived from them," indirect reference to the Nazis takeover of the country. "We are very sorry to give up his workforce," his employers wrote in what looks as a recommendation letter instead of a firing one. Hermann Bendheim Hermann Bendheim The History of the German Templer Settlement of Sarona in Palestine 1871-1947 Instead of staying in the Third Reich, he visited the Holy Land with his fiancee. They returned to Germany, married and then moved to Palestine, where they settled in Nesher (near Yagur, which is mentioned in the German document reproduced above), not far from the German Colony in Haifa. He worked in the town's cement industry; Nesher ("eagle") is the main cement brand even now. His wife Orna, established a hotel in Nahariya, the main settlement of Jewish Germans in Israel. Nowadays, a hotel named after her exists on the spot. Hermann was rather surprised to be invited by the Third Reich Consulate in Jerusalem. On June 15, 1935, he was awarded the Cross of Honor for having served in the frontline during the World War 1914-1918, "In the Name of the Fuhrer and the Chancellor of the Reich." The Third Reich knew that he was a Jewish citizen. His only son, still alive, found the Nazi honor only after Hermann died in 1962. In 2011, the German hometown of his father, Bensheim (as with other names in this article, I am transliterating from Hebrew, readers are welcome to correct me), named its main plaza after the family. Haaretz mentioned several other German Jewish soldiers awarded the same award and even the Iron Cross. They claim that this is an inconsistency of Nazi Germany. Winning Propaganda However, German and German Jews (nicknamed "yekim" in Israel, "yekeh" in singular) have a solid reputation for accurate and systematic work. A different explanation exists. On July 19, 1934, after the Nazi Party achieved power, Jewish-German weekly C.V.-Zeitung published an article entitled Cross of Honor, in which it stated "The German Jews...will carry the Cross of Honor proudly, keeping alive the memory of the great days of the shared Jewish-German history." Nazis would not have given away Cross of Honors if their demonic image were true. German Jews would not have written such words in 1934 if they have assessed the Third Reich as demonic. The only evil exposed is the demonization of the Third Reich by those who won the war. Was the assassination of Prince Franz Ferdinand justified? Killings are always wrong, unless the defender supports and promotes a state. Was the assassination of Prince Franz Ferdinand justified? The answer depends on the side of the person's allegiance. 1918 and 1945 were not different in essence. Large wars ended then. History started to be rewritten by those who won them. Tupac Amaru Execution Tupac Amaru Execution Bolivia has robbed all my belongings and documents in the unholy name of Zion & Associates. Surviving one night out on the violent streets of La Paz is impossible. People are killed every day here for the most worthless items. "The choco must have something of value," they will exclaim and attack. "Choco" is a derogatory term used by Bolivians against foreigners of dark hair. Blonde foreigners are called "gringos." In September 2012, I published 15-Day Execution Order. I won't fight my de facto execution. Yet, I want to remind Bolivia that its legal predecessor executed Aymara leader Tupac Katari in 1781, he was torn by his extremities into four pieces. Despite the government rhetoric, nothing was learned since then. Katari's last words were: Naya saparukiw jiwayapxitata, nayxarusti waranqa, waranqanakaw kut'anixa... You are only killing me, we will return millions! Will Roi Tov suffer a reenactment Tupac Katari's assassination by the Andean State? * Sarona, Jaffa Oranges and the original Shamouti Oranges Shamouti oranges were developed by Palestinians in the 19th century. They are almost seedless, sweet and rather easy to peel. Jewish settlements along the Coastal Plain adopted them. In one of the first national marketing efforts, they adopted an revolutionary marketing strategy. The main competition was oranges from Spain, a world leader in the field. In contrast, the Bible doesn't even have a word for orange. Modern Hebrew uses "tapuah zahav," "tapuz" in its short form, to design oranges. "Tapuah" is a generic term denoting a round tree fruit. If used as a standalone word, it refers to an apple. Thus, "tapuah zahav" can be translated as "golden fruit" or "golden apple." Marketing oranges from the Holy Land was a Herculean task. "Jaffa Orange" they declared in a first-ever attempt to treat fruits individually. This created a successful brand that was identified with the State of Israel for many years. Even brands get tired. Shortly before I left, I saw oranges with stickers stating "Shamouti," the original, Arabic name of the wonder-oranges. Tired brands are often refreshed. Yet, there are clear rules for performing the upgrade successfully. Sharp changes in the motif and new ideas that are unrelated to the old ones are widely considered as damaging. Winchester Barak Classical Bauhaus building with "thermometer" windows $ The real Tel Aviv is quite different from the picture most international readers probably have in mind. Mostly, the city is confused with its metropolitan area, namely "Gush Dan," "Dan's Block" in Hebrew. The latter is comprised of seven towns, and is surrounded by several others. With a total population of roughly three million people, this is the largest urban area in the Holy Land. Tel Aviv is at the center, on a north to south axis, of the area and at its western edge, next to the sea. Formally, the city is a consolidation of Tel Aviv and Jaffa; by combining the two cities, the Israeli administration avoided having a Palestinian town at the center of its largest metropolis. Jaffa is an astonishing place; Andromeda, from Greek mythology, was attached to a prominent rock still in place. Prophet Jonah began his trip in Jaffa's Port; the town is also mentioned in the New Testament. Its unlikely neighbor, Tel Aviv, was founded in 1909. Tel Aviv name means "Hill of Spring" and refers to a place in Babylon; strange choice for Zionists preaching "Jerusalem, Jerusalem." From 1933 onwards, German architects escaping the Nazi regime arrived at the young city and built its center in what is known as "Bauhaus Style." Over 4,000 buildings were built in this style, which is known also as "International Style." It combines functionality, simplicity and elegant lines; its delicate, rounded balconies are one of its best known features. The style was adapted in Tel Aviv to the local heat. For example, note the "thermometer" windows along the staircase in the picture above. They allow air to cool the building down during hot summer days. Another characteristic is the whiteness of the buildings, so that their walls would reflect light and cool down the structure; as a result, the city is known as the "White City." In 2003, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed Tel Aviv's White City a World Cultural Heritage Site. It defined it as "an outstanding example of new town planning and architecture in the early 20th century." UNESCO recognized the unique adaptation of modern international architectural trends to the cultural, climatic, and local traditions of the city. This means money, since the achievement attracts tourists. However, this also meant that the Israeli administration is committed to preservation efforts that will keep the spirit of the original design alive.
