Washington : The size of a woman's ring finger can predict her entrepreneurship, career interests, and a host of other traits essential to success in a high stakes, high tech career, a new research has suggested.

Economists Aldo Rustichini and Luigi Guiso hired a small army of 200 assistants to go out and interview over two thousand Italian men and women small-business owners and founders.

While taking interviews, the scholars also captured images the entrepreneurs' right hand palms to measure the length of their ring fingers relative to their index fingers, according to the Huffington Post.

Surprisingly they found that the ratio of index to ring finger correlates with traits such as spatial ability, risk-taking, and assertiveness. It's connected to success in competitive sports like soccer and skiing.

More interestingly, their analysis of the photos found that the more successful the entrepreneur, the longer the ring finger compared to the index finger. The most successful entrepreneurs had ring fingers 10 per cent to 20 per cent longer than their index finge.

This finding probably sounds downright absurd. But it's not really about the length of your fingers. Finger length is actually just a marker of what was going on in your mother's womb.

A couple months into gestation, fingers sprout and elongate, and, also during that time, the early limbic brain gets organized. Both of these are affected by the prevalence of the hormones testosterone and estrogen, which come both from the fetus's own sex glands and the mother's bloodstream.

The fetal ring finger has many receptors for both hormones on it, and the index finger has fewer receptors. Testosterone lengthens the fetal fingers, while estrogen stops their growth, and thus the balance of the two hormones can affect the ring finger and index finger differently. The two hormones simultaneously shape the development of the brain.

All of which is a very technical way to explain that the length of the ring finger is a marker for fundamental – but not entirely known – brain system differences.

Normally, men's ring fingers are a tad longer, and women's index fingers are a tiny bit longer. But in the Italian study, the female entrepreneurs actually had more of a male pattern: their ring fingers were longer. In fact, it was more pronounced in that direction than the men's. And it wasn't just their ring fingers that were bigger: on average, they ran bigger companies, with higher growth rates. They also had greater ability to withstand enormous workloads.

This suggests that entrepreneurs are special, wired that way from the fetal stages of development. More men might be wired this way than women, but if you are wired this way, it transcends gender.

But this does not imply that venture capital firms should just throw out the business plans and take photos of entrepreneurs' hands. It's not all biology.

Rustichini noted that some scientists believe that all the biological components of competitiveness, taken together, comprise 40 per cent of the explanation. Others argue it's more like 60 per cent.

According to Rustichini, if people's childhoods don't cultivate the competitive psyche, or if the society they live in isn't supportive of women's efforts, they're never going to succeed as entrepreneurs, no matter how long their ring fingers are.

I mean the article gives the impression that it is something we should all want to strive for.

Hear hear. I should have explained why I posted this at the top.

This is in response to HOUNDDAWG's comment containing a home made video "proving" that Michelle isn't a woman. Its first premise is that her longer ring finger makes her a man. I took that issue and did a quick search to see if it was valid. It clearly isn't.

In your rush to defend Michelle Obama you got a bit sloppy.

Instead of carelessly slanting the point of contention please quote my "comment" with which you took issue.

And it's interesting that you cherry picked the one physical difference that is obviously not conclusive and used it to "dismiss by association" those which you are unwilling to address.

Also, many women with these finger variations are young enough to have been affected in utero by plastics that mimic hormones (as evidenced in recent years by ghastly specimens of hermaphrodite lizards and frogs) fluoride, above ground nuke tests in NV, etc.,.

If you wish to dismiss the question about Michelle (or Serena) being born male you'll have to do better than just a weak swing at me, referring to a single non sequitur (or imagined) quote by yours truly.

My only comment on the subject was to point out that Joan Rivers wasn't simply insulting Michelle, but was actually repeating the assertion that Michelle is a post-op transsexual. And the photos are from national publications, and your suspicion that they're Photoshopped is Pollyanna wishful thinking at best or, intellectually dishonest. (a charge that one would be hard pressed to offer a spirited defense against for you)

If you have no case then why throw up a grifter smokescreen? The folks here are too resourceful to be transparently deflected from the points you cannot dismantle or begin to address.

HD, I didn't think you actually cared about the video very much. I sure didn't mean for you to take my limited dissection of it personally. Photoshopped or not, the arguments of this video don't hold up: some women have big necks; some women have broad shoulders; women past their prime look less and less feminine; the list goes on and on.

I feel sorry for the couple who produced this piece: they genuinely believe in something, but they rely on too much speculation for me. Really, a lot of this kind of material floating around the internets is like that. I could have kept going in my rebuttal research, but who has the time?

You could be right on all points. But, President Obama was selected long ago and forced upon us by a group so insidious that the very notion of a transgender first lady fits such a diabolical plan perfectly.

And the explanation of Serena Williams and "her sister" becoming tennis pros as a result of their father's greed is very plausible, and Serena has the same physical anomalies that call Michelle Obama's true chromosomes into question.

Thanks for your reply, Dawg. I really didn't mean to rile you up so much, but I'm just no good at wrapping my strong opinions into soft language.

It seems unlikely that a transgendered tennis player would go pro and get away with it. There is so much scrutiny of players for fitness and drug use. After your first objection to my shallow analysis, I did a quick survey of Michelle Obama's pictures using Bing Image search. I found those pictures to be less unflattering.

To your first point above, I agree but don't have any valid evidence (yet) to conclude that this has happened. Since I discovered in my own quick survey that women can have longer ring fingers, I stopped right there in evaluating the other claims made in the video. The first one simply wasn't valid at all. It seems that the force of distaste for the Kenyan's values are so strong in some that their imaginations go wild. Fine, but I don't see it helping the situation.

My point here is that we can get more traction with people currently unsympathetic to our favorite causes here if we stick to known facts. I didn't watch the Joan Rivers video because I can't stand 20 seconds in earshot of her voice. I don't trust her to tell the truth about anything, either. It's long been said that sincerely Zionist Jews are unsatisfied with Obama's "secular" support for Israel. To you and me, this makes not an iota of difference, but to Joan, hey, it's rhetorical open season on the Kenyan's lanky carcass. The first Wookie is fair game automatically.

On the wider issue of Truthing, if a revelation through a good investigation and analysis gets the anger to rise, I'm all for it, if it's clearly factual. But knowing Americans who differ with us on our strong dislike for "our" President and his family, I'd rather stick to known facts when criticizing him. For example, he has a Nobel Peace Prize, but his handling of the Ukraine situation was vulgar and provocative.

By the way, I like to point out to "conservatives" who dislike Obama that they object to his race. This is often met with guffaws and strong objections. Some bellow back, "I'm not a racist." I think it gets them thinking.
