I'm reluctant to accept this as good news, yet.

The general's request may be a plea for resources to intervene in El Salvador and Guatemala and other countries. The Southern Command's domain extends to Central and South America.

One possible interpretation of the general's request is that he's seeking resources and authority to nip the problem in the bud, to correct the problems in these "failed" governments. It's a possible escalation in the drug war.

If Kelly wants to combat "UACs" (unaccompanied children) — his term — at the border, congress may balk. We've seen many times before that intervention leads to an increase in immigration from the countries touched by our military's action.

I wonder if this 4-star general views anything that he's commanded over or done during his illustrious career as having threatened America's existence.
