Yahoo... "Engineer, American astronaut, and the second person to walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 moon landing" Buzz Aldrin participated July 8 in a Reddit AMA for the promotion of the 45th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, happening on July 20.

He touched on a sensitive topic: his apparent admission that he and other astronauts had seen a UFO during the Apollo 11 mission.

This is an old favorite of internet UFO conspiracy theorists (and, sadly, the Science Channel), who are convinced that Buzz Aldrin saw an alien ship of some kind during the Apollo 11 ride and that he's been covering it up and hiding that he's a UFO believer.

According to an article on OpenMinds (a UFO truther website):

In an interview on the Science Channel in 2005, Apollo astronaut "Buzz" Aldrin said that the crew of the famous Apollo 11 mission had seen a UFO on their way to the moon. However, later Aldrin would say that his words were taken out of context, even though his story was supported on the program by senior Apollo 11 scientist, Dr. David Baker. Aldrin has also made other strange statements that some believe allude to Aldrin knowing more about an extraterrestrial presence in space than he would like to share.

The Science Channel show, "First on the Moon: The Untold Story" spurred a lot of talk about Buzz Aldrin's UFO-friendly leanings. Aldrin clarified what he saw during the July 8 AMA:

On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world - it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And i feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected off of one of these panels. Which one? I don't know. So technically, the definition could be "unidentified."

We well understood exactly what that was. And when we returned, we debriefed and explained exactly what we had observed. And I felt that this had been distributed to the outside world, the outside audience, and apparently it wasn't, and so many years later, I had the time in an interview to disclose these observations, on another country's television network. And the UFO people in the United States were very very angry with me, that i had not given them the information. It was not an alien. Extraordinary observations require extraordinary evidence. That's what Carl Sagan said. There may be aliens in our Milky Way galaxy, and there are billions of other galaxies. The probability is almost CERTAIN that there is life somewhere in space. It was not that remarkable, that special, that unusual, that life here on earth evolved gradually, slowly, to where we are today.

But the distances involved in where some evidence of life may be, they may be hundreds of light years away.

To be fair, this has all been out there for awhile. Aldrin even appeared on "Larry King" to discuss it. After the Science Channel clip came out, NASA's David Morrison checked in on Aldrin in response to an "Ask an Astrobiologist" question:

I just talked to Buzz Aldrin on the phone, and he notes that the quotations were taken out of context and did not convey the intended meaning ... Apparently all of this discussion about the panels was cut from the broadcast interview, thus giving the impression that they had seen a UFO.

[The Goat Man] The Goat Man I do not know if flying saucers truly exist but 45 years ago while walking from my garage to the house I heard humming noises and when I looked up saw 3 round objects flying over my head toward the ocean. They were not that high in the sky. One was in front and 2 where just behind it on the left and right sides. They were white and kind of glowed and shook a little left and right while flying straight ahead. I heard the humming noise moving over my house for 2 nights after that about the same time but never again. I feel if there are UFOs they may come from the ocean as that was where they were heading. Just sharing my experience for what its worth+41-4.

Flyzapper I guess the eleven flying saucers that flew over the White House, photographed by Time Life, were just not there, roughly about 1947, when Truman was president, shown on the cover of Life Magazine. Nor the four star general who also was on the cover around 1952, giving a warning that we need to consider flying saucers was just kidding. And Ronald Reagan and other presidents just made them up, as they had nothing worthwhile to talk about. Nor the giant UFO that hung over Phoenix Arizona was just my imagination and others. And the monument that Buzz Aldrin said we should investigate on one of Jupiter's moon was nothing more than his imagination also. Or the pictures of flying saucers in the background of many NASA space missions are not really there. And Brussels four star commander simply sent fighter planes to chase nothing, as he was imagining that his radar had an image of a UFO. And the numerous paintings with depictions of UFOs are nothing more than man's imagination gone wild, over the centuries. Glad the article helped make up my mind, there are no UFOs, as we are the only ones among billions and billions of planets and star systems.+8-4

If you believe that UFO's have visited our planet, then you're dumb+1-8 [Don Ramsey]

Marius, onboard ship on the west pacific goin to Japan 15 of observed a UFO, ownly we call it indentified, it was about 12 feet in diameter and paced our ship. so that makes 15 dumb people including the CO, XO, 2 OOD's, 2 quater masters, 2 radiomen, 2 helmsmen, 2 lookouts, 2 fire watch standers and 1 off duty personell.... Guarding your Country.

Robert ME being a pilot, we see often objects buzzing us, mostly at night but guarantee you we DO NOT TELL ANYONE!! lest we loose our license. The feds make absolutely sure it stays out of the media and from being identified. I saw a cylindrical object hovering about 2000 feet right in the approach path of the airport, large and in charge, planes flew under it and NO ONE reported it, we just flew under it and just landed, said nothing. The object was about 100 feet long about 50 feet in diameter, situated itself in a vertical position slowly rotated.....then just disappeared...GONE. Yep we keep our mouth shut and say nothing. Can you imagine how much work and cost a pilot's license costs? a whole lot!!! Yeah the astronauts saw something but they were too early in their career to say a thing about it, but now who cares, what are they going to do take his name? +19-4

motherpannI saw a low flying craft, no higher then a cell phone tower, that was triangular in shape, flying so slow a regular plane or helicopter would stall. also it was silent. it was not too large had blinking lights forming a V shape on 2 of the 3 sides. this was 3/16/14 in Fla. A month later almost to the day another craft flew the same path but this moved a little faster, was covered in lights and I could not tell what shape it was but it looked cigar shaped. it headed towards the harbor and in the matter of seconds it became a pinpoint in the sky.

Greg UFO enthusiasts are not all nutcases. As Governor of California, traveling aboard his personal plane in the summer of 1974, Ronald Reagan saw a strange object flying outside his window. At Reagan's suggestion, the pilot followed the UFO for a few minutes before it suddenly shot straight up and disappeared in a flash. Reagan is unique among celebrities in not only seeing a UFO, but engaging in fearless hot pursuit.

Later, as President, Reagan addressed th UN in a famous speech in which he speculated about the invasion of the earth from Outer Space.

Other notables who have witnessed UFOs include Billy Ray Cyrus, Mick Jagger, Muhammad Ali, Jimmy Carter and Victoria Beckham+28-4

. DanielWhen I served in the Navy in the 1990's, I served as an Operations Specialist... Our main job was monitoring radars... I had two experiences with UFO's during that time.. One time while we were doing drills off the coast of San Diego we picked up something on radar that wasn't supposed to be there.. It was jumping all over the scope... So we sent to FA-18's out to check it out... When the one pilot got out there he was close to doing Mach 1... I was on the radio when all this happened... he made contact with the object and started to follow it.. He had to speed up to keep up with this thing... It then disappeared off radar... His radio transmission after it had disappeared off radar, was that he seen a diamond shaped object that was flying about 20 ft above the ocean floor.. When he got too close the object accelerated at a very high rate of speed and then immediately went vertical and out of sight.. No craft we had at that time could do those maneuvers... The pilot that reported this was immediately grounded... My other experience was when we were on our say to Australia.. We were about halfway between Australia and Hawaii... On the mid watch we picked up radar contact out of no where... The object was doing about 7000 mph... It was coming at us quick... Our Chief of the watch was alerted to this and basically freaked the f*** out... he ordered a helo and an F-14 to go check this out... They got our pilots on deck and the object got to about 100 miles away from us on radar... It was a solid hit, so it was nothing wrong with the equipment.. At 100 miles away it just went poof into thin air.. Our helo and jet went out there to check it out and nothing... So yeah there is some crazy sh** out there people+28-4

JimP ... When an alien intelligence wants to contact us, they will do so. Until then we have little chance of ever meeting any aliens. Any intelligent life advanced enough to travel between stars is going to make sure they control any contact situation with us. When some astronomical observatory reports sighting and unidentified object entering Earth's atmosphere from space, then I'll notice. Otherwise all the so-called UFO sightings are merely various phenomena that originate here on Earth. I remember one show about crop circles showed footage of a "mysterious glowing object" hovering about a field. I looked at the video and it was OBVIOUSLY a white plastic grocery bag being blown about by the wind. Yeah "UFO," right.+10-4

JimP...Canadian Head of State. You are deluded if you believe any government knows any more about UFO's than you or I. I am from a USAF family, raised on bases around the world. My father worked on some of the early weather satellites, and my classmates were the children of the original 7 Mercury astronauts. Fast forwarding, I have met and talked to people who worked at Area 51. The whole thing is a red herring designed to create the belief that there ARE UFO's in order to hide and disguise our own spy plane technological developments. There are no aliens at Area 51, and there never have been any aliens. The Roswell incident was also used by the Air Force to conceal its high altitude balloon testing, designed to function as a mechanism for spying on the Soviet Union. The Air Force has long encouraged the public to believe they might be hiding something, in order to provide a smokescreen for their own activities. I am not making this up. The information I've mentioned here is technically classified, but as I said earlier, the people I've talked to who worked at Area 51 have been allowed to speak at Sci-Fi conventions about things that were going on at Area 51 in the 50's and 60's. Please forget about any freaking government conspiracies about UFO's. They are as dumb about it as all of us.

The University of Utah, along with the Utah Bureau of Mines, concluded that these rapidly moving balls of light, making abrupt, and erratic changes of course, sometimes momentarily suspended in air, are in reality, escaped spurts of gaseous material, ignited be the friction of the enormous pressures created by the grinding together, of the subsurface movement of rocky plates, that happen with significant frequency, often not intense enough to register as an earthquake, but as a very mild tremor. When these gaseous spheres surface extremely hot, and contact oxygen, they ignite and take off like an erratic piece of fireworks.3-6

Sooz56 Golly! You just wrote something similar that happened to us in the '70's. It was close to dusk, and we heard a call come in over our police scanner, and several area police departments were following it in a straight line down a street close to us, heading west, as well. We followed the cops. This thing was a steady light, and not strobing, made no sound. It hovered over a grade school, and we all pulled in to watch it, and discuss it. After a few minutes, it went above the trees again, and we followed it into the next town. We all went screaming into the parking lot of an empty grocery store, where it was hovering over the nearby water tower, and all of us got out of our cars again to look and speculate. All of a sudden it shot straight up into the sky and disappeared. We were credible business owners, and the cops were expert witnesses. The scanner was all talk about it after we went back home. A report was made to MUFON, and a few Air Force bases were called after our friends made their police reports. Never heard another word about it, but we all sure talked about it for years and years. There were about 10 of us involved. I still keep scanning the skies, but I'll never have a chance to experience something like that ever again. I SO believe in UFO's.3-1

On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon,

I'll believe that he even went to the moon when we send up another unmanned lander that takes pics of all of our crap up there and that flag.
