Inevitable but dismal and tragic: Democratic Senators Chuck Schumer and Robert Menendez join Republicans Kelly Ayotte and Lindsey Graham in sponsoring a resolution calling for an end to the unification government of Palestine. And anything Israel wants to do to defend itself, fine. The four on Thursday introduced a resolution expressing support for the State of Israel as it defends itself against unprovoked attacks from the Hamas terrorist organization.
The rockets are an existential threat, evidently. The resolution:
Reaffirms the United States’ support for Israel’s right to defend its citizens and ensure the survival of the State of Israel;
Does the survival of that state require slaughter? This resolution would seem to be more about the delegitimization of Israel in international fora especially in the shadow of the end of the peace process.
Not a word about Palestinian death. “The State of Israel is under siege on multiple fronts,” writes Lindsey Graham. Here is Schumer’s statement:
“Israel is entitled to take the steps necessary to protect itself from destructive rocket attacks from Hamas that are aimed at all Israeli civilians, regardless of their religion,” said Senator Schumer. “This resolution supports Israel as it protects itself in a manner that values the safety of Palestinian civilians even as its own civilians face indiscriminate attacks from terrorists. It is time for Mahmoud Abbas to do the right thing and break ties with Hamas.”
