“Ashraf al-Qidra of the Gaza Health Ministry said shelling from an Israeli gunboat off Gaza’s Mediterranean coast killed four boys – two aged 10 and the others 9 and 11 – from one family and critically wounded another youngster on the beach,” reports Reuters.

According to Guardian reporter Peter Beaumont, who was an eyewitness to the attack, the shelling appeared to target an area on Gaza’s harbor where fishermen store their nets.

“Only afterwards do we discover there are four others who are dead, all children, lying on the wall,” writes Beaumont. “I am shown a picture of one of the dead boys, his skin scorched and bruised. Their names are released later: Ahed Bakr, aged 10; Zakaria, 10; and two other boys from the Bakr family, both named Mohammad, aged 11 and nine.”

News of the deaths arrived after Israel urged thousands of people in east and north Gaza to evacuate their homes in order to escape the air strikes. In the absence of any proper critique of Israeli policy from the mainstream media, it took comedian Jon Stewart to point out the ludicrousness of that advice.

“Evacuate to where?” asked Stewart. “Have you f***ing seen Gaza? Israel blocked this border, Egypt blocked this border. What are you supposed to swim for it?”

Despite the grossly disproportionate casualty figures – 211 dead Palestinians (mostly civilians) to just one dead Israeli – supporters of Israel remain convinced that the ZIonist state’s ceaseless bombardment of occupied Gaza is proportionate and justified, despite the fact that retaliatory Hamas rocket attacks are virtually toothless.

Some even went so far as to justify the slaughter of the four boys as a legitimate defensive action.

Even for someone who is vehemently pro-Israel, to describe the murder of four innocent children as anything other than a horrific tragedy is clearly a disgrace. The tweets below provide an insight into the twisted and delusory world view amongst many that serves to legitimize Israel’s brutal policy in the region.
