The Russian Investigative Committee has arrested two suspects in yesterday's Moscow metro tragedy. The incident occurred on Tuesday morning when a train derailed between the Park Podedy and Slavyansky Bulvar metro stations. According to the latest information, 22 people died and July 16 has been declared a day of mourning for the victims. Russia's President, Vladimir Putin, has expressed condolences to family and friends of those who died.

Valery Bashkatov, track supervisor of the Moscow Metro unitary enterprise and Yuri Gordov, assistant track supervisor, have both been arrested, the Russian Investigative Committee said. They are suspected of violating transport safety reegulations (Article 263.1, part 3 of the Russian Criminal Code).

The suspects have been questioned the authorities plan to press charges against them and press for a suitably deterrent sentence in the near future.

Faulty railroad switch may have caused Moscow metro tragedy – Russian official

The tragedy in Moscow's metro may have happened because of a faulty railroad switch, which was helf in place with a wire that had broken off, said Vladimir Markin, an official representative of Russia's Investigative Committee.

"The investigation committee thinks that the works weren't carried out properly: the railroad switch was fixed with a simple wire that broke off. As result, the train came off the rails," Markin said.

A train derailed on tuesday between the Park Podedy and Slavyansky Bulvar metro stations. According to the latest information, 22 people have died and 129 hospitalized, of which 42 have been left with severe injuries. It has been reported that a number of foreigners were among the dead and injured.

July 16 has been declared a day of mourning for victims of the Metro accident in Moscow. Russia's President Vladimir Putin has expressed his condolences to the families and friends of the victims. "Vladimir Putin deeply sympathises with the family and friends of the victims and wishes the fastest recovery to those injured in the accident," presidential spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said in a statement.
