Casey Kasem's widow has taken his body out of the country, says eldest daughter

EXCLUSIVE: Kerri Kasem said the temporary restraining order that a judge granted her forbidding movement or burial of the remains was too late. 'She’s just spiteful, malicious and vindictive,' the daughter said of her stepmom.

Casey Kasem’s widow has spirited his body out of the country, his eldest daughter claimed Friday.

Kerri Kasem said her dad's body is no longer at the Gaffney Funeral Home in Tacoma, Wash., where it languished for a month under wife Jean Kasem’s control.

In an exclusive interview with the Daily News, Kerri said the temporary restraining order that a Washington state judge granted her on Wednesday forbidding movement or burial of the remains was too late.

“My stepmother is doing everything to keep my father’s burial a secret so that none of his loved ones can visit,” Kerri told The News Friday.

“She’s just spiteful, malicious and vindictive,” Kerri said.

Widow Jean Kasem was in control of the body after Kasem’s June 15 death ended Kerri's control over his medical treatment.

Jean later commissioned a private autopsy in Tacoma and made arrangements to send Kasem to the Urgel Bourgie Funeral Home in Montreal, Canada, by July 14, a recent death certificate obtained by The News said.

“My dad has nothing to do with Canada. He lived in Los Angeles for 45 years. It just once again proves that my stepmother is not acting in my father’s best interest or respecting his wishes," Kerri said Friday.

Kerri Kasem won a conservatorship over her dad and got a court order to take him to the hospital by ambulance on June 1.Ted S. Warren/APKerri Kasem won a conservatorship over her dad and got a court order to take him to the hospital by ambulance on June 1.

Kerri, the oldest of three kids from Kasem’s first marriage, said she's not even convinced her dad will remain in Canada and could end up in Israel or even France.

She said it's "sad" because her dad previously told loved ones he wanted to be buried at Forest Lawn in the Hollywood Hills.

In a strange twist, Jean Kasem used a Jerusalem address as her husband’s place of residence on his death certificate.

Casey Kasem was 82 when he died under hospice care at St. Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor on Father's Day.

Kerri asked for her temporary restraining order this week because she now is seeking her own follow-up autopsy amid dueling accusations of elder abuse.

“Kerri Kasem has a well-grounded fear that her right to petition for authorization to conduct an autopsy on the remains of her father, Casey Kasem, could be adversely affected if Jean Kasem were to remove Mr. Kasem’s remains from Washington State, or if Jean Kasem were to cremate Mr. Kasem’s remains,” the order signed by Pierce County Superior Court Judge Ronald Culpepper said.

Kerri and Jean were locked in a bitter battle over the radio icon in the weeks before his death. Kerri has since filed a police report in Santa Monica, Calif., accusing her stepmom of elder abuse.

Her police report, obtained by The News, accuses Jean of hastening her dad’s death by yanking him from a Santa Monica nursing home in the middle of the night May 7 against his doctor's advice, taking him on a road trip to Arizona and Nevada and causing an infected bed sore that left him “moaning” in a “hot room” at a friend’s house near Seattle.

Kerri had won a conservatorship over her dad after the May 7 incident and got a court order to take him to St. Anthony by ambulance on June 1.

He was admitted in critical condition with a wound infection related to a "serious" pressure ulcer, the hospital said.

He also had advanced Lewy Body Disease, a form of dementia, and doctors advised Kerri he only had days to live. They advised her to place him on “comfort care” in hospice, Kerri previously told The News.

She initially fought the suggestion but agreed when doctors explained his body was shutting down, so his artificial feeding and hydration were causing painful side-effects akin to drowning, her lawyer has said.

Jean, 60, fought the hospice decision in court and has threatened to file her own claim against Kerri.

“Given that she has threatened to sue me for Elder Abuse and Wrongful Death, I am concerned about the results of any autopsy Jean Kasem may have commissioned and how they might be used,” Kerri said in a personal statement to the judge that granted her temporary restraining order.

“Consequently, I thought it would be best to ask the Washington Court to allow me to have an autopsy conducted by a forensic pathologist of my own selection,” she wrote.

The Santa Monica Police report obtained by The News included a notation that a request would be made with the Pierce County Coroner’s office.

The July 15 copy of Kasem’s death certificate stated that his cause of death was “pending.”

It listed Eric Kiesel, a former Pierce County medical examiner, as the certifier.

Dr. Kiesel and a lawyer for Jean Kasem did not immediately respond to requests for comment Friday.

The Washington judge overseeing Kerri’s autopsy petition set a hearing for July 25.

“It’s not going to go anywhere now,” Kerri said of her petition Friday.

What a mess.

Over the years I see more family feuds when a loved one dies. Plus, I hear lots of other similar stories from friends.
