DENVER (Reuters) - Three more people in Colorado have been diagnosed with the plague after coming in contact with an infected dog whose owner contracted a life-threatening form of the disease, state health officials said on Friday.

In all, four people were infected with the disease from the same source, the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said in a statement.

Last week the department said a man in an eastern Colorado county whose dog died of the plague had been diagnosed with pneumonic plague, a rare and serious form of the disease.

The man remains hospitalized, but authorities have not released his condition.

The three people in the latest reported cases had "mild symptoms" and have fully recovered after being treated with antibiotics, the department said, adding that they are no longer contagious.

Two of the patients in the new cases contracted pneumonic plague, the department said.

Pneumonic plague is the only form of the disease that can be transmitted person-to-person, usually through infectious droplets from coughing.

The bacteria that causes plague occurs naturally in the western United States, primarily in California, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The infected canine in Colorado likely contracted the disease from prairie dogs or rabbits, which are the primary hosts for fleas that carry the bacteria.

When an infected animal dies, the fleas spread the disease when they find another host.

Colorado has seen a total of 12 cases of humans infected with the plague over the last decade, said Jennifer House, the department's public health veterinarian.

"We usually don't see an outbreak like this related to the same source," House said.

Colorado had not had a confirmed human case of pneumonic plague since 2004, she said.

[lsat] Suppose defense were privately administered by insurance companies rather than publicly administered by nations. How could the acts of savage murderous aggression so typical on the part of governments ever arise from private insurance companies the public has signed up with to protect their person and property ?

Sunwyn ... For those who are interested, the plague (Y. Pestis) is endemic to the marmots of Siberia. During the 19th century plague was carried to China by trappers who killed marmots and brought their flea-infested furs to market. The fleas moved to rats and the disease was carried to the US by rats living on ships. The plague was mostly wiped out in California, but survived by moving into the marmots and other rodents of the Sierras. In the early 19th century farmers on the Great Plains heard that there was a disease killing rodents in California (marmots don't die of plague but other rodents do.) The farmers deliberately brought infected animals to the Great Plains and left them in prairie dog burrows in order to kill off the prairie dogs. They did not kill all of them but they killed off most. The plague moved from the plains up into the Rockies where it once again found marmots to survive in. Other rodent populations get it from time to time, some die and others become immune. So thank you farmers for spreading bubonic plague over the western half of the USA, it would have taken much longer without your help.

[DEFAULT_USERNAME] Commenter... There are well over a dozen nasty diseases that field mice, rats, rabbits, p. dogs, etc. can transmit to humans. Similarly, there are over 30 different nasty microbial pathogens (virus and bacteria, including one related to the plague organism - Yersinia enterocolytica) that have been found in raw milk, some of which are easily passed from child to child at school. While the very mild thermal process of pasteurization will eliminate all but the rare spore forming pathogen in the milk (and it results in a very small reduction in the vitamin C and B12 content, ~10% at most, other nutrients, much less), there are many that think their financial gain trumps the health of the children in the community. They have convinced a very vocal and very poorly informed minority that this is a good idea; it is not.13-2

[Eric] Yersinia enterocolitica is rare and usually resolves on its own. If not, antibiotics resolve it. It is not plague by any means, though you are correct it is a relative. Raw milk is used often and is quite healthy, compared to pasteurized, though that process does degrade the vitamin content some, thus the addition of vitamin D, etc. People drank raw milk for millennia without becoming sick. However, the factory farms are not conducive to raw milk being healthy. Your local farm is the best choice. You have just been an alarmist.

granny Putting prairie dogs on the protected species list was a huge mistake. These creatures are destructive, disease-ridden vermin. Extinction is too good for them.

Marsha P Every lifeform that lives in Arizona, will bite, sting, stick, suck, infect or poison you; and make you want to move from this harsh, hot, horrible, hateful state... It rains mud and ice crystal snow, even the wind is full of bacteria and sticky dust.4-1

[Little Grey Otter Cat] Fungal spores cause Valley Fever, aka Coccidioidomycosis, not bacteria. Humans, cats and dogs, and other mammals can all develop Valley Fever from inhaling the spores. Unfortunately, it is one of those illnesses for which the development of a vaccine is apparently not a priority. Fortunately, though, most mammals that are exposed to it do not develop symptoms. The fungus is found in the soil in the regions where the disease occurs. Regarding the plague, if you live in a part of the United States where bubonic (and pneumonic) plague is known to occur, be careful and take appropriate precautions. That includes keeping your pets up-to-date with their flea treatments2.

junkmaster Dog Eats Squirrel; Dog Lick Face; Man gets a Coating of Bacteria; Ends UP With PNEUMONIA!

[Sunwyn] Marmots, squirrels, rats, prairie dogs: marmots are preferred but any rodent will do for a plague flea.

DEWEY the bubonic plague is an infection of the lymphatic system, the pneumonic plague is an infection of the respiratory system, and the septicaemic plague is an infection in the blood stream. Typically, pneumonic form is due to a spread from infection of an initial bubonic form. Primary pneumonic plague results from inhalation of fine infective droplets and can be transmitted from human to human without involvement of fleas or animals. Untreated pneumonic plague has a very high fatality rate.

P.... Attention editors Wallis and Beech: bacteria is the plural form of bacterium and therefore takes a plural verb. So "(t)he bacteria that causes plague" is incorrect.

[C-Alice] People don't realize the words data and criteria are plural as well.

[Sunwyn] The people who write this stuff are idiots but then so are most of the readers. I just come on here to annoy stupid people. So many idiots, so little time.

I doubt very much there could be a widespread return of the plague as there was in the middle ages, due to our understanding today of how it spreads, the less cramped living, and safeguards that would be taken at all levels.
