YahooNews... A Dutch cyclist who says he was scheduled to be on both Malaysia Airlines flights MH370 and MH17 — only to switch his tickets at the last minute — knows he's lucky to be alive but has decided to stop speaking publicly about it.

Maarten de Jonge, a 29-year-old rider for the Terengganu team in Malaysia, said in a statement on his website that he's been inundated with media requests since tweeting about his fortunate change of plans.

"I'm frankly overwhelmed by the number of requests," de Jonge said. "What has happened is terrible, so many victims, that's a horrible thing. From reverence for the victims and their families, I do not think it [is] appropriate to tell my story."

Officials say 298 people — 189 of them Dutch citizens — were killed when Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was struck by a surface-to-air missile along the Russia-Ukraine border.

While de Jonge said he is "happy" he decided not to take the flight at "the last moment," his story "is ultimately nothing compared to the misery so many people are [experiencing]. Attention should be paid to the victims and survivors. Wishing everyone affected by this disaster a lot of strength."

The cyclist was planning to travel back to Kuala Lumpur on Flight MH17 on July 17 after competing in last month's National Championship Road Race in the Netherlands, but told a local television station he decided to save money by flying through Frankfurt instead.

According to the Telegraph, de Jonge was scheduled to be on Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur en route to Beijing in March but switched his ticket to avoid a stopover. The flight disappeared from radar and has yet to be found.

"I could have taken that one just as easily," de Jonge said, according to RTV Oost. "It's inconceivable. I am very sorry for the passengers and their families, yet I am very pleased I'm unharmed."

According to his website, de Jonge, who finished 35th at the Dutch cycling event, was still planning to fly to Malaysia via Frankfurt on Sunday.

"I have been lucky twice,” he said. “You should try not to worry too much because then you won’t get anywhere

Oedi This makes me think of Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who lived in Nagasaki but was in Hiroshima on business on Aug. 6, 1945. He survived that atomic bomb, then returned home and survived the other one three days later.

Mike Sad thing I bet he get hits by a car riding his bike. More people die each year on bike 900 average in the US than the average world plane crashes 500

Klepto Please let the other passengers on the next flight you cancel know that you will not be flying so they have a chance to cancel as well.33

Cheezy Cheese He obviously has contacts with the CIA.

[Dancingdeaddog] While they say flying is safer than driving, an automobile accident usually only claims a few lives...An aircraft crash claims hundreds! I think I'll stick to trains.2-1..

[Herman] About 109 Americans die in Automobile accidents every day. That's more than two plane crashes a week.

NJ... Another cheating cyclist. Great

Shinra Corporation... Were he a sailor, other mariners would call this man 'marked.' There are certain individuals in more superstitious fields -- but particularly those who sail the seas -- who believe that there are men out there that are destined to face a certain fate, and that, after a few near misses, it is only a matter of time before that fate catches up with them. I don't know this man, and I can't speak for him. But were I in his shoes, I would never set foot on an aircraft again38-5.

Kara... If he were American he would survive all of this only to be robbed and shot by some thug outside of the 7/11 just a few months later.14-1

John... I cheated death twice. The two times I visited Chicago and lived to talk about it.5-`

CensoredAgain. Why can't we just put all the people in Gitmo on Malaysian Airlines and tell them if they can fly 911 X's without dying---they get to walk? It's good odds now---they will fall 30,000 before they walk away alive. Gitmo's empty--left is happy. Muhammad meets Jaws or Osama bin Fishfood. Everyone is happy.

[Yerp] try not to sound retarded next time

__merovingian021374... can we stop focusing on dumb #$%$ and focus on living forever though I love this story it is too early for it. There are people suffering wishing their loved ones would have been lucky, so its not good to celebrate over fresh wounds. Show more compassion. Lets quit talking about death is for sure, yeah they said the earth was flat but forgot to look up at the moon and see round. So we see life created but think it for sure has to end, hmmm, we know it can be created so we know for sure it can be created forever.1-3

[adam] I wish you were on that flight.

Deborah D Some sort of subconscious prerecognition? Would be interesting to do some psychic testing on this guy.

Tatarewicz...If the crash was a setup by some benefiting entity then it's psychicly possible for the subconscious to pick this up, become aware of it and arrange survival alternative without cognitive awareness. Most folks lose the subconscious awareness of infancy when they move awareness into the prefrontal cortex.
