Adventures in Cosmology:

During the middle two hours, professor of Physics at the University of Michigan, Dr. Katherine Freese , discussed her work in theoretical cosmology and the latest developments in our understanding of the Big Bang, dark matter, dark energy, and the nature of the universe. She argued that searching for answers to these 'big questions' about our world is important on two levels. First, Freese said, it helps to satisfy the basic human curiosity about our surroundings that can be credited with having driven the intellectual evolution of the species. Additionally, she suggested that "accidental discoveries may come out of this research" which could greatly benefit the human race in an inadvertent way, such has how the World Wide Web was actually originally created as a data-sharing network for CERN scientists.

Regarding the origins of the universe, Freese noted that much of the debate over the nature of the Big Bang appears to be settled. "The basic picture, we've really nailed that," she said, "but, boy, we have a lot to learn about what the universe is made of." To that end, she explained that science remains vexed by the two predominate forces which comprise 95% of the contents of the universe: dark matter and dark energy. According to Freese, the promising work being done at CERN, and at other labs around the world, has created optimism in the scientific community that it will soon be able to unlock the secrets of dark matter. However, she acknowledged that dark energy remains "a real puzzler" and that "we don't even know where to begin. At the moment, it's just a label for something we don't know very well."

NASA's Search for ETs:

In the first hour, UFO researcher Paola Harris shared her thoughts on the NASA news conference concerning the search for alien life. She expressed dismay that the space agency proposed that it is humanity's responsibility to find ETs rather than acknowledging the possibility that alien life has already visited here. She also lamented that, during the conference, NASA scientists theorized that it could take another 20 years before ETs are discovered by humans, which is a timetable she found both frustrating and laughable. Citing the vast amount of evidence surrounding the UFO enigma, Harris declared that "it isn't so much that they're going to find life on other planets. Life on other planets is visiting us ... period."

Lunar Aliens & the 'Wow!' Signal:

In the final hour, Joshua P. Warren talked about his role in the upcoming ScyFy documentary 'Aliens on the Moon' as well as the infamous 'Wow!' signal from August of 1977. In previewing the ScyFy film, Warren contended that the very limited atmosphere of the moon makes it an ideal candidate for finding possible ET artifacts and evidence, since such material could have been preserved there for thousands of years. Regarding the 'Wow!' signal, Warren announced that, on August 15th, he will be broadcasting a message into space from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico to mark the anniversary of the event. The communication, he said, will consist of a minute long recording that will be replayed for an hour and asked George to be the voice of this message to ETs that will be beamed into space next month.

After-Death Communications:

On Sunday night's program, George Knapp welcomed clinical psychologist, Dr. Allan Botkin , who discussed how he created Induced After-Death Communication (IADC) therapy while counseling Vietnam veterans in his work at a Chicago area VA hospital. While IADCs, which seem to allow for communication with deceased loved ones, appear to be supernatural, Botkin stressed that he tries to avoid speculating on the nature and veracity of these experiences, since his focus is primarily on facilitating healing and recovery for his patients who are struggling with grief and trauma. "That's the only argument I really want to make: it works," he said, "it heals people to a degree that has not been even thought to be possible."

He explained that, after having great success with a treatment known as "eye movement desensitization and reprocessing ," he began tweaking the technique in the hopes of improving its results. While working with a patient named Sam, who was a Vietnam veteran that had befriended an orphaned girl during the war and witnessed her gruesome death, Botkin tried this new form of therapy and was startled by the results. Toward the end of the session, "a big smile came over Sam's face" and, upon opening his eyes, he reported seeing and talking with the girl, now fully grown, as well as hugging her. The veteran marveled that he could feel the girls arms around him during the hug, which Botkin thought was some form of hallucination. This assessment soon changed when his other patients also began reporting similar ADC experiences as a result of the revised treatment.

Over the course of the evening, Botkin detailed a number of remarkable cases of IADC events that have been experienced by patients in his care. In one unique session, the subject opened his eyes after only five seconds, which made Botkin think the process hadn't worked. However, the man then detailed a lengthy ADC and thought that he'd had his eyes closed for two minutes. Another patient, who was traumatized from being a young child present at the assassination of Martin Luther King, claimed to have actually communicated with the slain civil rights leader during his IADC treatment. Botkin also told the story of a Vietnam vet who was communicating with his best friend that was killed during the war and was delighted to see, seated behind his departed companion, "all the rest of the guys in the company that had died."

Little People of North Carolina:

In the first hour of Sunday's show, Sky Ships over Cashiers website editor Mary Joyce talked about an ancient race of Little People who once lived in the North Carolina mountains. According to Cherokee lore, she said, when the tribe migrated to North Carolina long ago, they discovered "neatly tended vegetable gardens" throughout the area. The Native Americans subsequently discovered 'little people' emerging from "under the ground" at night and working on their gardens via the light of the moon. Lending credence to the reality of these tales, Joyce revealed that excavation projects in the region have unearthed tiny skeletons and, within an ancient burial mound, small tunnels were also discovered.

Flight 232 & Survival Stories:

On Thursday's show, award-winning author and journalist Laurence Gonzales discussed his work researching the 1989 crash of United Airlines Flight 232, and the incredible stories of those who survived this deadly disaster. He was drawn to the intense drama of the incident, with passengers exhibiting feats of heroism, and caring for people they didn't even know. The DC-10 flight bound for Chicago suffered catastrophic engine failure which led to the loss of flight controls, but somehow the pilots and a DC-10 flight instructor who happened to be a passenger, managed to crash land the plane at the Sioux City, Iowa airport.

Upon landing, the right wing of the jet hit concrete, and about 10,000 pounds of fuel ignited, with the tail snapping off and rocketing down the runway at 250mph, he recounted. Amazingly, of the 296 aboard, 184 people survived. One survivor, seated in the second row, said that when the plane hit, his seat belt popped open and he found himself watching the plane disintegrate as he began to float. "He went flying through the air...like Superman, and his feet went through the fireball as he was flying, and he flew hundreds of yards and landed in a cornfield," Gonzales reported. When the plane finally came to rest, it was upside down in the cornfield, and many of the survivors who escaped found themselves wandering amongst 9ft. tall plants. Some were so disoriented by the surreal scene, they thought they had died and gone to an afterlife, he said.

Gonzales was impressed by accounts of human resilience and compassion. One man noticed that a woman was holding down her baby during the crash, but the child flew away upon impact. After he exited the plane, he heard a baby crying, and went back into the burning craft and rescued an infant who was inside an overhead bin beneath his feet (the plane was upside down). The child turned out be someone else's baby, not the one he was trying to rescue (subsequently, chief flight attendant Jan Brown spearheaded a campaign to have infants properly restrained in their own seat, rather than held in a parent's lap). The crash affected the survivors in different ways, leaving all with some emotional residue, but some continue to suffer from PTSD to this day, he revealed.

Ball Lightning:

First hour guest, research scientist Robert Golka shared reports of mysterious ball lightning, and how the phenomena relates to physics. He defined ball lightning as a discharge from when lightning strikes the ground, and it somehow rolls up and becomes a stable structure of ionized particles that last up to a minute, in various sizes and colors. "The amazing thing is it floats around, and can go against the wind," which seems to defy the model of plasma physics, he remarked. For more, check out this collection of YouTube videos featuring Golka's research.
