A prominent French lawyer says he has filed a complaint at the International Criminal Court (ICC) on behalf of the Palestinian government against the Israeli army.
Gilles Devers said that the complaint covers war crimes committed by the Israeli army in June and July 2014 in Palestine.
He added that the complaint is valid despite the fact that the Palestinians have yet to sign up to the Hague-based ICC.
According to the French lawyer, Palestine is a non-member observer state at the United Nations and its ICC membership has been delayed only because of political quarrels.
The challenge against the Israeli army at The Hague comes two days after the UN Human Rights Council passed a resolution calling for an independent probe into Israel’s war crimes in Gaza.

On Wednesday, the UN rights chief said Israeli military's actions in the impoverished region could amount to war crimes. Navi Pillay was speaking at an emergency session of the United Nations General Assembly on Israel's Gaza offensive at the council.
International bodies and human rights groups say civilians account for the majority of the victims of the ongoing Israeli war. Women and children make the bulk of the civilian casualties there.

The developments come as Israel has been relentlessly pounding the Gaza Strip for the past 18 days.
On Thursday alone, more than 100 people were killed as Israel conducted fresh attacks on the blockaded Palestinian territory.
About 830 Palestinians have so far been killed and over 5,300 wounded since the Israeli military first launched its onslaught on the Palestinian enclave on July 8.
