The Swedish government announced that it plans to remove all mentions of race from Swedish legislation, saying that race is a social construct which should not be encouraged in law.

'The concept of race is a slippery slope': Ullenhag (01 Aug 14)

"We know that different human races actually do not exist," Swedish Integration Minister Erik Ullenhag told Sveriges Television (SVT).

"We also know that the fundamental grounds of racism are based on the belief that there are different races, and that belonging to a race makes people behave in a certain way, and that some races are better than others."

The concept of race is included in around 20 Swedish laws, including criminal code, student financial aid laws, and credit information laws. On Thursday the Swedish government began an investigation into how to remove the concept from all legislation, as has been done in Austria and Finland.

"Legislation should not include the word race, if we argue that there are not actually races," Ullenhag said. "I have wanted to remove the concept of race for a long time." Oscar Pripp, associate professor of ethnology at Uppsala University, welcomed the idea. He said that the concept of race is necessary to understand people's social behaviour, but that it is not necessary in law.

"It sounds rather sensible," Pripp told The Local. "Not to scrap the word entirely, but that it should not be included as a concept in legislation, because then you're saying that there are indeed different races."

Pripp went on to say that race in and of itself does not exist, but is rather something that is "done" in society, such as in the labour market, housing market, and other areas.

The proposal has come under sharp criticism, however, from the National Afro-Swedish Association (Afrosvensarnas Riksförbund, ASR). "This scientific racism that Ullenhag is focused on, when he says that racism is based on believing in different races, is not true," Kitimbwa Sabuni, spokesperson for the ASR, told The Local.

"How many people in Sweden really think that way? Maybe 100. That's not the problem. Racism existed before the concept of race biology. Scientific racism is just one chapter in the story of race and racism."

Sabuni concurred that race is a social construction, but from there his views diverged.

"Just because it's a social construction doesn't mean it's not a reality," Sabuni said. "For us, this is just trying to take away the possibility to even talk about it. It's critical."

Follow-up: 'The concept of race disappeared from scientific discourse more than a decade ago'

Sabuni said the government's plan would be a serious roadblock in the fight against racism. He also stressed that those impacted by racism should be consulted before such a decision is taken.

"How can you apply for a grant for fighting racism if the concept of race doesn't exist in legislation? Racism will disappear de facto from the agenda. The government is lost in a fantasy, a fantasy which counteracts effective work against racism."

The government has assigned chief district court Judge Erica Hemtke the task of investigating the issue, as well as looking into expanding protection of transgender people in Swedish legislation. Both assignments should be completed by December 7th, 2015.

Elsewhere Pripp is unhappy with official signs and text describing monuments in Sweeden's Skåne region because they appear too exclusive and linked to the Sweedish people. First some very watered down text (from a travel site) describing the monuments, then a quote from a paper studying the same problem. Both links have some great pictures.

Ales stenar is a famous creation. 59 large blocks of stone raised around 1400 years ago to form a ship-like formation. One of the most popular attractions in Skåne.

59 mysterious monoliths arranged by our ancestors. A spectacular sight, where the sea, the earth and the heavens meet. Ales stenar is 67 metres long and 19 metres wide, and is made up of 59 large blocks of stone which form a ship-like formation. The stones were raised around 1400 years ago, and is Sweden's largest ship barrow, and one of the most popular tourist attractions in Skåne. Kåseberga, with its picturesque harbour and famous fish smokehouses, is the perfect location for a peaceful walk.

The formation is in the shape of a ship, but nobody knows for certain what the original purpose was behind this ancient, powerful symbolism. Was it a solar calendar, or a memorial to the dead? Perhaps it was a meeting place where rituals were held to mark the changing of the seasons? Many different interpretations have been put forward for these majestic stones. The legendary giant Ale probably never existed, but “Ale” (or “Als”) can also mean shrine.

Above travel site text from guide.visitskane.com/en/t...0/ales-stenar/showdetails

The following study quotes Pripp's analysis arguing for the elimination of racial links to the Swedes at the site: www.arkeologiskasamfundet...2012_s131-167_hogberg.pdf

This state of affairs has been held up as an example of how the heritage management sector has failed to question the way in which it communicates and selects content in what is mediated through texts, illustrations, and the layout of signs. Studies have shown that this failure has helped to confirm prevailing power relations and to cement established perceptions of what heritage and heritage sites represent and what their function is in today’s society (for a discussion see Waterton 2009, 2010). An example that clarifies this is a study by Oscar Pripp (2008). He has shown that heritage sites are often appreciated by visitors but that the information provided at the sites creates a sense of exclusion (Pripp 2008). A powerful contributory factor in this is that the signs are designed in such a way as to convey a sense of belonging that is associated with shared experiences of having grown up in the same cultural or social context.

More on Ales Stones here.

I love how the main objection comes from the Afro Swedes ( i.e. if you do away with the concept of race, how are we going to get grant $ to study racism?). Lefties fighting lefties over idiotic pc thinking is music to my ears.

However SVT reports that Zakaria Zouhir, a Left Party activist and President of the National Afro-Swedish Association (ASR), opposed the Government's decision on the concept of race: "It is an important tool to highlight the structural discrimination that exists in society. And that affects a significant portion of society's citizens, solely because of their skin colour."

NeoCon source. The NeoConservative principle in effect, from Limbaugh to Wiener to Krauthammer: racial identity is only used to promote special treatment, based on government intervention on behalf of equality, by those who are playing the minority victim card. This is a corner into which the "right" has painted itself.

Thanks for sharing your condescending soap box blather but I think my brain can discern the difference between political slant and falsehoods.

I enjoy reading the news from a multitude of sources. I don't censor sites because they have a particular slant. Most if not all news sites, blogs have slants.

Actually reason I put a ? in my comment #4 was because I could not understand your objection to the breitbart link when its article used quotes from the same 2 Swedish sources that Tat's posted article did. I used another source because Tat's article posts often have no url's or they contain extraneous ads or links in the text that made my eyes go cross-eyed. No offense intended, Tatarewicz!

In this instance the Breitbart article was almost identical to that of Tat's so I'm not sure why you went off into the tall grass railing about "the right" and "neocons."

Whatever floats your boat, I guess. But just know that I'm not going to stop reading or linking to news sources that don't meet your individual standards of pristine objectivity.

That's why many use DrudgeReport to scan the headlines, and then choose whatever they wish to read.

Not that his links won't be spinning, but Drudge has no slant whatever.

I wrote nothing intentionally condescending toward you. It's the failed political strategy I'm criticizing.

Your "criticism" in this case was misplaced. The Britbart article was almost identical to Tat's posted article. There was no evil neocon/right editorializing. It used quotes from the same Swedish news sources as Tat's did.

Maybe next time before you whine about the biases of a blog/news site, you should first read the article to see if your broad brush stroke demonization has any relevance.

Ironically it was your remarks that showed pre-conceived biases as opposed to the Breitbart article under discussion.

Let's get back to what you said. Why didn't the Swedes object on the basis that their own culture is racial? I'll guarantee you that some of them are thinking that. Is that left-wing? Or is it the "real" left that doesn't dare to concern itself with that problem? Or that lauds its disappearance from discussion.

It's a NeoCon meme that if the subject of race would go away, racial preferences for minorities would all vanish overnight and the Republic would be restored, and liberty would ring out across the land. As a member of the Anglo-Saxon race, I object to any notion that races don't exist, or that treating them neutrally is "conservative."

Preferring non-whites with social programs is a bane, but the solution isn't 150 years of forced integration followed by erasing all legal definitions of race. The solution is to recognize that America's legitimate founding peoples were Anglo-Saxon and permit them to discriminate against others in any non-violent manner they choose.

On Swedes and Anglo-Saxons, there are fewer and fewer of them every day. This won't turn around because the government refuses to recognize them.

This conversation is going nowhere. You seem to be trying very hard to associate my humorous remarks about lefties undercutting lefties in Sweden with some evil neocon/Fascist outlook on race.

I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

Btw, please pass on my best regards to Robin, when you fly back to the nest.
