Title: (Tulsa) Schools struggling to accomodate Hispanic growth

Nearly 1/3 of all students in Tulsa Public Schools are Hispanic, and speak Spanish at home.

District leaders, like Laura Grisso, the Title 3 Director for TPS, tell FOX23 a lot of the growth is happening at schools like Skelly Elementary, in east Tulsa.

"Our Hispanic population, as of last year, is the largest racial and ethnic population across the district. So a lot of those families need that support in Spanish and we haven’t been able to find as much staff as we need. We’ve got a lot, but we need more," said Grisso.

When we visited the TPS Enrollment Center on Monday, FOX23 found many parents there did not speak English.

TPS posts signs in Spanish, and offers interpreters and translators.

"It’s been critical, and we have even brought in, besides the staff we have, we’ve brought in local contractors to bring more support, because that’s where we’re seeing the largest number of enrollment is within our Spanish speaking and Hispanic populations," said Grisso.

At the enrollment center Friday, we found three different families, where the mother did not speak English and brought an older child along to translate.

"A lot of times that teenager is missing school to be here, which is unacceptable. They're missing a day of instruction, which we know is very important, and another day they could be spending in the classroom, learning those skills in English," said Bradley Eddy, TPS Director of Certified Talent.

"Even though we have a good number of Hispanic people in our area, we don’t have a good number of those who really sought the teaching profession or have really completed the college necessary to become that teacher," said Eddy.

With more than 10,000 students learning English in the classroom and speaking Spanish at home, TPS leaders say they need more bilingual staff.

This year, a student who learned Spanish through the Immersion Program at Eisenhower International School, is back at the school as a teacher.

TPS leaders consider that a bilingual recruitment success.

TPS won't have exact enrollment numbers for a few more weeks, but as FOX23 reported, enrollment appears to be up this year, with more than 2,000 students than projected.

Philly's first Spanish immersion preschool opening 2015

http://aldianews.com/articles/local/philadelphia/phillys-first-spanish-immersion-preschool-opening-2015/35262

Filling a needed niche for families seeking a space for comprehensive bilingual early education, Philadelphia’s first Spanish immersion preschool is set to open January 2015.

The preschool aims to develop children into multicultural students with a staff of mostly native Spanish speakers with strong backgrounds in early childhood education. The school will teach through an all-Spanish curriculum that encourages learning through play, literacy, and math development.

Currently it will serve students 18 months to 4 years old. The project seeks to support total Spanish immersion that will allow a child to optimize his or her language learning potential.

“Research shows that students who study a second language score higher on average than their monolingual peers. Bilingualism can also benefit in the workplace. Research shows that bilingual workers earn, on average between 5 percent and 20 percent more than their monolingual counterparts,” states the school in its website.

The program also highlights the proven immediate cognitive advantages of multilingualism to help kids’ brains to work more efficiently. “For some families, it helps keep cultural and ethnic heritage alive; others are drawn to the promise of personal and professional opportunities in the future,” stated the educational institution.

‘Mi Casita Preschool’ was founded by Melissa Page, a former high school language teacher with a lifelong passion for Spanish language education. The school will be located at 1415 Fairmount Ave.

The 4600-square-foot location will be in a brand new building and will include a kitchen, library, and a variety of rooms for learning and playing. The location offers proximity to Clemente Park and Playground, Spring Garden Community Gardens, and Francisville Playground as well as very easy access to public transportation.

Page began speaking Spanish in Kindergarten and worked for five years as a Spanish and French teacher at GAMP High School (Girard Academic Music Program) in South Philadelphia.

Enrollment information for rolling admission beginning in 2015 is available at www.micasitaphilly.com.

Immerse those little wetbacks immediately - don't go the ESL route.

But there was more than merriment on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s minds as well, certainly in 1942-43 when Oklahoma! was first written and put into production. These were, of course, the darkest years of World War II and the Nazi holocaust: to most Jews of Rodgers’ and Hammerstein’s (and my own parents’) generation, America was a promised land. For many of them, frankly, it was THE promised land. To be able to sing “We know we belong to the land, and the land we belong to is grand,” was hardly a given fact for many people, and many peoples, in 1943. Sadly, it is hardly a given fact in many parts of the world today.

Not to spoil it: the work of this film was based on the nearly forgotten American Lynn Riggs' 1930 play Green Grow the Lilacs.

To me, Robert Cohen, drama critic, sounds like any one of a thousand miserable Jewish Hollywood creations.

Fuck the spics

I used to live in St. Louis and when the Third Worlders poured into the city all the parents opened up little private school in churches on the corner. I suspect this is happening all over the country. The public schools for the non-whites and inexpensive private schools for the whites.

public schools for the non-whites

Perhaps.

But even minority parents have wised up to the lack of 3 R's being taught in public schools, so some of them have tried - together with Caucasian parents, who admittedly are the driving force - to politick for school vouchers for their kids and not surprisingly they've met strong resistance from teachers' unions and lefty judges.

Here's a summary of the latest court case in North Carolina - ironically this NC lefty judge cloaks his decision in the Constitution:

There was a case, actually near Ferguson, where a black male was transferred into a mostly-white school and the first day he knocked out a 15-year-old white girl, stuck her head in a toilet and murdered her. He had a habit of going into the girl's restroom.

Any white who lets their children go to school with blacks is insane.
