America’s attention recently turned away from the violence in Iraq and Gaza toward the violence in Ferguson, Missouri, following the shooting of Michael Brown. While all the facts surrounding the shooing have yet to come to light, the shock of seeing police using tear gas (a substance banned in warfare), and other military-style weapons against American citizens including journalists exercising their First Amendment rights, has started a much-needed debate on police militarization.

The increasing use of military equipment by local police is a symptom of growing authoritarianism, not the cause. The cause is policies that encourage police to see Americans as enemies to subjugate, rather than as citizens to "protect and serve.” This attitude is on display not only in Ferguson, but in the police lockdown following the Boston Marathon bombing and in the Americans killed and injured in “no-knock” raids conducted by militarized SWAT teams.

One particularly tragic victim of police militarization and the war on drugs is “baby Bounkham.” This infant was severely burned and put in a coma by a flash- burn grenade thrown into his crib by a SWAT team member who burst into the infant’s room looking for methamphetamine.

As shocking as the case of baby Bounkham is, no one should be surprised that empowering police to stop consensual (though perhaps harmful and immoral) activities has led to a growth of authoritarian attitudes and behaviors among government officials and politicians. Those wondering why the local police increasingly look and act like an occupying military force should consider that the drug war was the justification for the Defense Department’s “1033 program,” which last year gave local police departments almost $450 million worth of “surplus” military equipment. This included armored vehicles and grenades like those that were used to maim baby Bounkham.

Today, the war on drugs has been eclipsed by the war on terror as an all-purpose excuse for expanding the police state. We are all familiar with how the federal government increased police power after September 11 via the PATRIOT Act, TSA, and other Homeland Security programs. Not as widely known is how the war on terror has been used to justify the increased militarization of local police departments to the detriment of our liberty. Since 2002, the Department of Homeland Security has provided over $35 billion in grants to local governments for the purchase of tactical gear, military-style armor, and mine-resistant vehicles.

The threat of terrorism is used to justify these grants. However, the small towns that receive tanks and other military weapons do not just put them into storage until a real terrorist threat emerges. Instead, the military equipment is used for routine law enforcement.

Politicians love this program because it allows them to brag to their local media about how they are keeping their constituents safe. Of course, the military-industrial complex’s new kid brother, the law enforcement-industrial complex, wields tremendous influence on Capitol Hill. Even many so-called progressives support police militarization to curry favor with police unions.

Reversing the dangerous trend of the militarization of local police can start with ending all federal involvement in local law enforcement. Fortunately, all that requires is for Congress to begin following the Constitution, which forbids the federal government from controlling or funding local law enforcement. There is also no justification for federal drug laws or for using the threat of terrorism as an excuse to treat all people as potential criminals. However, Congress will not restore constitutional government on its own; the American people must demand that Congress stop facilitating the growth of an authoritarian police state that threatens their liberty.

Do you know anyone including prisoners who can't get drugs if they want them?

After the end of alcohol Prohibition the powerful crime families that sprouted from it remained, and they're with us today.

If the CIA couldn't smuggle drugs in and protect their monopoly with the aid of federal, state and local drug agents we wouldn't have a well funded govt within the govt playing deadly geo political assassination games.

And, the Feds knew they had no constitutional authority to use the law to benefit "BIG LIKKA" and petro chemical companies that feared hemp production. Hence, the 2 dollar "Marihuana Tax Stamp" which was required for possession but was never issued to the public. The inability to purchase that revenue stamp is the reason we have the highest per capita prison population in the world, and no knock raids that result in the deaths of innocents with impunity by cops who phony up search warrants for the wrong addresses, and rip off drugs and cash from the right ones.

Years ago I read a 70 yr old news story about liquor agents involved in a gun battle from the running boards of their speeding cars right in front of what is now The University Of Delaware. When citizens as jurors decided that alcohol was bad but zealous enforcement of the Volstead Act was worse, then essentially the same crop of career politicians swallowed their pride and repealed the 18th amendment.

The corruption of cops, lawyers and judges now manifests as unlawful seizures of cash, Rolexes (do you carry the receipt for yours showing the purchase with Mastercard?) and other boodle as "suspected drug profits" from interstate motorists, and this windfall has reduced America to another wormy banana republic. Sure, we expect to be shaken down at a govt checkpoint in Guatemala. But if you're a traveling construction worker/equipment operator or millwright who doesn't trust banks (after the IRS left your family destitute the last time they made a mistake and you weren't home to challenge the seizure) can you blame folks who don't trust banks, aka IRS branch offices?

Would you applaud drug interdiction if some local cop in Louisiana (whose town happens to straddle I-10) pulled you over then sent you on your way with empty pockets after cherry picking your personal belongings?

After the Civil War the number one health affliction was The Soldier's Disease which was addiction to Laudanum, available through the mail and at apothecary shoppes nationwide. Yes it was bad, but there was no crime wave resulting from it.

The biggest beneficiaries of the phony drug war are govt and Dupont. The last thing BIG CHEM/BIG OIL want is another car made from hemp (like Henry Ford's) and fueled with hemp biofuel. And G_D forbid the world be treated to biodegradable plastics instead of petro plastic without an enzyme in the galaxy that will eat it.

The drug war ain't about crime or immoral behavior. Alcohol was the fuel that energized the touchy-feely creep, former Sen. Bob "Are those real?" Packwood. But he filled up with righteous indignation at the mere mention of decriminalization.

But, on the positive side, some kids under the age of 12 (before they get their Bar Mitzvah money) can't afford street prices for drugs. Surely that's worth billions of dollars, the loss of personal privacy and freedom and countless deaths, right?

See now that actually sounds cool.

How many family dogs got shot back then?

Hollywood and TV's Eliot Ness have created the image (myth?) that back then most revenoor busts were warehouses and large production facilities.

Killing animal companions these days is tragically newsworthy because so often its unrelated to an enforcement action, such as when cops use a farm lane to turn around, stop for directions or take a 10-100. If Fido happily runs up with tail wagging he may contract lead poisoning from a cop who's suddenly in fear of attack. (or DAWG hair on his uniform pants)

This is the natural progression in a society that issues pocket licenses to kill.

When the Feds attacked the Weaver household at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, they killed the family dog and shot Sammy Weaver in the back when he was running away. Real scoundrels, if you ask me. ;)

A real low point for the US Banana Republic.

Entrapment, improvised rules of engagement and the federal judge immunizing Lon Horiuchi from state prosecution.

The message is clear. The Party of Lincoln led the coup and overthrew the several states, and we've been involuntarily obligated operatives of the Federal Reserve Zone governors ever since.

Perhaps JW Booth wasn't a bad sort after all. The more I learn about Lincoln the less I adore him.

There is no money since June 6, 1933 when they abrogated the gold standard. We are all slaves to the banksters and the IRS (IRS is collection agency for the FED). ;)

I laff to keep from crying when I think of all the banksters' spokesmodels who criticized gold as "a barbaric metal".

Especially now that those same banksters can't seem to sock away enough of the world's gold including the former contents of Ft Knox. Every evidence locker in the US has had drugs ripped off and mannitol left as a substitute. Are we supposed to believe that banksters could be trusted to keep their fingers off of gold that they believed would never be melted and knew would never be coined?

Before anyone could be prosecuted the US Govt would have to admit to dishonesty and corruption. Let us not wait with bated breaths.
