sweet story, but I think the father did his son a disservice by being so secretive. it allowed his son to make assumptions that were not accurate and when his father wrote on the piece of paper, "you will be a great man" and told him this is for someone else, that was sad. the father should have been open and allowed the boy to willingly take part in the charity to others.

To question is to value the ideal of truth more highly than the loyalties to nation, religion, race, or ideology.

Exactly correct.

“The most dangerous man to any government is the man who is able to think things out... without regard to the prevailing superstitions and taboos. Almost inevitably he comes to the conclusion that the government he lives under is dishonest, insane, intolerable.” ~ H. L. Mencken

It's a shame that babies don't come with owner's manuals...

Possibly an underlining moral is that kids should respect and love their parents even if they don't understand them, taking faith they are doing the right things. That's more or less in line with eastern philosophy.

Great point - thanks.

Their culture/society really is much different from ours.

Truth has to be run through so many different filters, that it's tough to tell when it's been properly distilled.

At least for me...

did his son a disservice by being so secretive. it allowed his son to make assumptions that were not accurate

The son never shared his sorry assumptions about his father with his father....

Parents deserve to have secrets too. Givers are often the last to be telling of the gifts that they give, many don't even let the left hand tell the right. Dad was showing his boy by example and also by profound insights about the value of giving.
