PressTV... A tie-up between electronic car pioneer Tesla Motors and mobile phone company China Unicom is to see the setting up of a charging network for electronic vehicles across the country.

Peggy Yang, a spokeswoman for Tesla, which already has 200 dedicated charging outlets across China, said the project eyes setting up of 400 charging points in 120 cities.

She said the new plan includes a further 20 supercharging facilities, which can recharge EVs up to 16 times more quickly.

China eyes five million electronic vehicles on the road by 2020 and has offered generous incentives for electric cars. The country is mulling a charging infrastructure investment program worth a total of USD 16 billion.

China Unicom, the second-biggest mobile phone company in China, will pay the costs for maintenance and electricity.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has said that China could become the company's biggest market.

"I think it's really important. I think it could be as big as the U.S. market -- maybe bigger," Musk said. "I don't want to get overexcited about it," he, however, noted.

A robust charging network in the country could play a key role in garnering demand for Tesla's Model S and its upcoming Model X.

Key to all this is developing batteries that will take the cars much further than 160 miles on a charge.

Sometimes I think that we'll get a robust, standardized, rugged and reliable battery some day that will allow a motorist to pull into the filling station when a low-charge light goes on on the instrument panel.

The driver pays a deposit and a charging fee for each battery in service. After pulling into the station, the driver just swaps the empty battery for a fully charged one. Batteries could more easily be accessed by means of a pull out rack that would allow batteries to be readily removed and replaced. Most folks would need assistance, but then that could be automated too.

Electric car batteries. Swap them out like in your flashlight.

This sounds like a stroke of genius.

One of the draw backs to electric cars is the charge time.

Instead of waiting all night or 2 hours or however long it takes to recharge a battery , just pull in to a robo station, robot arm pulls out the old battery and puts in the new one in less than 5 minutes. And you are back about your way.

I think this is the best way to make the most use of a great idea.

KUDOS TO YOU randge.

Thanks, titorite.

But as Lod notes, these batteries are extremely heavy. And electric cars today are not built for routine R&R of these large components.

Still, when you consider the infrastructure involved in storing and supplying service stations with tens of thousands of gallons of 3 or 4 types of fuel on a daily basis, the task of storing and replacing batteries for customers might not be all that more difficult in comparison.

Who knows what the future might bring?
