Scientists in the US are working on replacing invasive procedures with a serving of yoghurt and a urine test to improve the early Physician and engineer Sangeeta Bhatia from MIT in the US is working on a new and inexpensive test for colorectal cancer, which involves ingesting synthetic nanoparticles in a spoonful of yoghurt, and then submitting a urine sample. Bhatia has developed a new type of synthetic nanoparticle that can interact with cancer cells in a patients body to produce biomarkers. These biomarkers will show up in a persons urine, which their doctor can use to diagnose them early on. According to Kevin Bullis at MITs Technology Review, this research builds on a previous study conducted done by Bhatia, which showed that these nanoparticles could locate tumour cells in the body and be broken up into smaller pieces by the enzymes they produce. These small nanoparticle pieces would then be collected by the kidneys, and excreted in a concentrated enough amount for detection. "The first iteration of the technique involved the use of lab instruments to analyse urine and find the telltale markers, reports Bullis. "Now Bhatia has developed a paper-based urine test - like the one youd use for pregnancy. So far this test has been demonstrated in mice for colorectal cancer and liver fibrosis." Bhatia is now figuring out how to get her nanoparticles into a small amount of yoghurt. Rather than adding the nanoparticle biomarkers to the yoghurt, shes modifying the bacteria in the yoghurt to produce the nanoparticles on their own. Shes also forming a new company so she can commercialise it for the public once its ready, hoping to focus on distributing it to several developing countries where few people are tested for cancers due to the cost of existing screening procedures.
