Make sure youre not courting illness every time you start cooking. According to research at Oregon State University, many American families are using gas stoves that are not properly vented. The result: a greater risk of asthma, asthmatic symptoms and chronic bronchitis. In homes (we studied) where a gas stove was used without venting, the prevalence of asthma and wheezing is higher than in homes where a gas stove was used with ventilation, says researcher Ellen Smit. Parents of all children should use ventilation while using a gas stove. The Oregon scientists havent proven definitively that gas stoves that arent vented are causing respiratory problems, but their study demonstrates the link between asthma and a lack of ventilation, says Smith. Asthma is an increasingly prevalent childhood problem. And nearly 50 percent of American families are cooking with gas stoves. Gas stoves have been shown to increase indoor pollutants and various studies are ongoing to pinpoint the interactions between these pollutants and lung issues. The researchers found that kids in homes where gas stoves are ventilated with exhaust systems are 32 less likely to suffer from asthma than other children whose families use unvented stoves. In addition, children living in houses where stoves are vented enjoy a 38 percent reduced risk of bronchitis and 39 percent reduced risk of wheezing. Asthma is one of the most common diseases in children living in the United States, says researcher Molly Kile, an environmental epidemiologist. Reducing exposure to environmental factors that can exacerbate asthma can help improve the quality of life for people with this condition. Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
