You see, William Lawler is a 38-year-old army veteran. He also happens to be a longtime firearms instructor. He legally carries his 9mm Glock with him wherever he can. And for good reason. He knows he needs it to protect himself. When 37-year-old DeCosta approached the couple as they came up to their home in Philadelphia, he thought he was going to get what he wanted. Threatening to cut them up if they didnt listen to his demands, he seemed dead-set on hurting the couple. DeCosta is a career criminal with a rap sheet as long as a country mile. Hes been arrested 21 times on charges like assault and theft. And now hes going to have a 22nd arrest to add to his rap sheet when he gets out of the hospital. Regardless of his many run-ins with the law, it didnt stop the crazed man from advancing on Lawler and his girlfriend, even when he was repeatedly warned not to. As Lawler recounts, At least a half-dozen times, I ordered him to stop, Lawler told the Philadelphia Daily News. When DeCosta kept coming, he yelled, I dont want to shoot you, but I will. Lawler eventually had to make good on his threat. When DeCosta was only five feet away, Lawler pulled out his gun and shot DeCosta in the groin. My intent was to stop him, not kill him. I hope hes OK, and hopefully he will be prosecuted, Lawler said. DeCosta is presently in critical condition. While its very fortunate Lawler escaped with his life, the firearms instructor waited until it was almost too late to deal with the advancing threat. Heres the mistake Lawler made
He was probably familiar with the Tueller Drill. The Tueller Drill states anyone closer than 21 feet should be treated as an immediate threat. That means if a man with a knife is within 21 feet of you, the chances youll be injured are extremely high. Allowing someone to make it within 5 feet of you is a recipe for disaster. Its something Lawler should have never allowed to happen. Thank God he was able to discharge his weapon when he did or things could have been a lot worse. Just like every gun owner knows that an attacker with a knife is a serious threat when theyre 21 feet or closer
they should also be able to recognize the signs when politicians pose a threat to their second amendment rights. Right now your gun rights are under attack. For the time being you can still build an off-the-books AR-15. While it remains to be seen how long this will window of opportunity last, its safe to say now is the best time to take advantage of this legal loophole.
