In a survival situation, if there is one thing you can count on, it’s murphy’s law… If something can go wrong… It will and if you don’t have redundancy built into your survival plan, you my friend are S.O.L This really hit home with me recently. You see, I just finished reading really good book and it left me speechless. Once I got into it I absolutely couldn’t put it down… It exposed just how vulnerable we really are… The book was a piece of fiction dealing with a somewhat implausible threat, but it hit me right between the eyes over one simple truth. The guy was away from home and separated from his family when things went south… The story had a happy ending, but for only ONE reason … He HAD a well stocked “Stow Bag” actually a “Get Back Home Bag”, and if he hadn’t had the forethought to pack and maintain that bag, well, I guess it would have been a VERY short book… Most of us familiar with the concept of preparedness already HAVE a bug out bag at home for that that “Just In Case” moment we hope never happens. What really got my attention in the book was the well planned and packed kit he had in his car. The hero of the story was hundreds of miles from home when the massive EMP attack, leaving EVERY piece of technology crippled and worthless. And he NEVER would have made it home without this kit… That situation really set me to thinking about just how many ways things could get bad enough that I’d need to get out of Dodge in a hurry. It’s not just an EMP attack, it could be any number of disasters, both natural and man made. The more I thought about it, the more I realized just how close to the edge we really are… After all, the 3 most likely scenarios that are likely to turn your neighbors into fearsome animals have already happened! Catastrophic Weather Hurricanes, Tornadoes, Floods, Earthquakes, Tsunami’s- Let’s not even bring up Katrina, 1 hurricane that left over 800,000 people scrambling for food and water for 3 days without any help from the government. Imagine being trapped along with 800,000 other panicking people… Now imagine if you could have just bugged out 2 days before disaster hit. Which would you rather put your family through – a quick escape before the storm hits. Or spending weeks as a member of Club FEMA… Waiting in mile long lines for scraps of food and bottled water with your children in tow. This is a tinderbox of desperate people just waiting to explode… and you’re right in the middle of it. But it’s not just weather you have to worry about… Every day we run the risk of … Not-So-Natural Disasters Not quite as likely as catastrophic weather, the fact is that a hostile attack planned and implemented by enemies of the US has happened already, and can happen again. Of course, we don’t need terrorists for things to go wrong. Remember Swine Flu? 3 Mile Island? Out of control forest fires? LA Riots? Even if you trust the government to keep things running smoothly (which strikes me as a losing bet), you still have to believe some pretty big fantasies. Fantasies such as: A new virus or bacteria is never going to spread to our shores and cause massive panic That the Boston Bombing was the last terrorist attack the US will ever face That if the government cuts food stamps or other assistance programs, all those people are just going to quietly let their families starve An existing Virus can’t or won’t make a vicious comeback Think about it…There are literally HUNDREDS of scenarios where you’d have to ask yourself “do I really want to be locked inside a fortified house in the middle of a sea of angry, hungry, distressed or diseased people, all of whom are willing to take drastic and desperate to get what you’ve worked so hard for?” But even that isn’t what you should be really worried about… The scenario that I am most concerned with is complete and total… Infrastructure Failure This is far more likely than either of the other two. I’m not talking about a black or brown outs… I’m talking: Lights out – PERMANENTLY … No power for the pumps that deliver running water … No heat or AC for DAYS, WEEKS, Months ( If The grid ever comes back online at all!) … Total, Complete, Crippling , Catastrophic , And Permanent FAILURE If you don’t think this is likely, then you must not know the simple fact that a single tree branch took out the power for over 100 power plants, leaving MILLIONS of people without power.
