Former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev says tensions between the US and Russia have put the world “on the brink of a new Cold War”. He accuses the West, particularly the United States, of giving in to “triumphalism” after the collapse of the communist bloc a quarter of a century ago. US President Barack Obama shared the former Soviet leader’s concerns, but he blamed Russia’s actions in the Ukraine for current tensions. The back and forth has many on the edge of their seats, on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. Sounds scary, right? Cold war! Spying, a constant threat of a shooting or nuclear war, deception, surveillance… Then I realize, “holy crap, the United States government makes me feel this way already.” A New Cold War A New Cold War? Screw the Russians, the United States government is listening to my phone calls, reading my emails, and flying spy planes over my home. They wage wars in my name while sending weapons to the same groups they claim to be at war with. Some idiot with a crock pot allegedly drops a backpack in a garbage can in Boston, and on the day the first shots of the first American revolution were fired, there’s martial law on television. To add insult to injury, the lunatics under said martial law, danced in the streets after. If the “Cold War” was scary, then modern day America is far scarier. At least the threat to my safety and privacy was foreign back in the 80’s. Now it’s a bunch of people who claim they are trying to help me that keep me awake at night. What I wouldn’t give for the threat to my safety to be thousands of miles away and speaking a different language. Whether it’s Russia, or ISIS, or Al Qaeda, or any of the other boogeymen out there that the US Government wants me worried about, I’m far more concerned about the guys in Washington, Concord, and the Keene City Council. The Russian government doesn’t claim the lawful authority to kick down my door in the middle of the night and kill me. ISIS doesn’t read my emails. Al Qaeda isn’t trying to take my guns away or dig through my financial records. Quite the contrary… All these scary foreigners that the US Government and it’s political subdivisions want me to be afraid of, are actually the enemies of the people who claim all this authority over me. The Russians want to undermine the people who claim authority to tax my income, this might not make them good guys, but it doesn’t make them my enemy. ISIS wants to kill people who used those taxes to blow up their homes and kill their families, it might not make them my friends, but I get it, and I’m not exactly anxious to fight them. Al Qaeda wants to kill the same people that killed Kelly Thomas, kidnap people for feeding the homeless, and turn arguments into shootouts and house fires, I doubt we’ll go out for beers anytime soon, but they’re really the least of my concerns. I’m not buying it anymore folks. I’m no longer impressed with the propaganda. You had me after 9/11, I’ll give you that. I took that bait hook line and sinker, but that was 13 years ago. I’m a little older, a little wiser, and your repetitive lines are no longer convincing. I don’t care if you claim you’re fighting the Russians, the Chinese, the North Koreans, communism, Nazism, “radical Islam”, racism, misogyny, inequality, or any of this crap. I know who your real target is – me. So cut the charade, put the gun to my temple, and tell me what the fuck you want already.
