We lost a family member this afternoon; it was time, but God, it's so tough. He's in a better place, where he'll greet us when it's our time to go home.
I am so sorry about your loss; yes, it is hugely tough. We surely pay a dear price for the privilege of having love in our life...and we surely would not relinquish that glorious privilege, nor would a loving God deny us a reunion.
"The 'uniter' has brought the entire world together - to despise and deride us." Lod
I am so sorry Lod. I know how much it hurts to lose a pet you really love. I have lost some too and, like you, I look forward to the day when I will see them again.
Americans who have no experience with, or knowledge of, tyranny believe that only terrorists will experience the unchecked power of the state. They will believe this until it happens to them, or their children, or their friends. Paul Craig Roberts
"When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men living together in society, they create for themselves in the course of time a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it." Frederic Bastiat
I'm sorry for your loss, he was a pretty dog!! How old was Jake?
With the exception of Whites, the rule among the peoples of the world, whether residing in their homelands or settled in Western democracies, is ethnocentrism and moral particularism: they stick together and good means what is good for their ethnic group." -Alex Kurtagic
Jake was approaching 15. He had some sort of infection/malignancy/whatever that was causing him to lose hind end function, as well as his hair falling out with raw sore suppurating spots all over.
It really was time to help him get to a better place asap.
He, like the rest of our departed critters will live in our hearts forever.
RIP friend

I'm so sorry, Jim. 15 years for a large dog is a long life. I know that doesn't make the hurt any less painful right now, but you have many wonderful years with him and Jake was blessed that he was a Lodwick.
I love what Bub wrote above. So sweet and so true.

With tears in my eyes, I'm telling you that I'm so sorry for you, Loddy. For those of you who don't know "Rainbow Bridge", here it is...
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

And I give you this...
A Dog's Prayer
Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.
Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.
Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.
When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.
Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.
And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.

Thanks,
Tears are once more running down my cheeks.
Thanks also to all my friends here who have offered their thoughts, sympathies, condolences, and prayers on Jake's moving on to a better place.

A neighbor had to end his good old dogs' suffering recently. We had a discussion about "Dogs in Heaven", and I'm sure I convinced him they WILL be there ! :-)

These little creatures love us unconditionally and it is impossible not to notice it. And when they pass we are left with a void in our hearts and lives without them in it.
I am grateful for the time we have with them as I'm certain you are as well.

When government gains the power to control the use of private property, it becomes possible for the politically dominant to profit by high commodity prices using government regulation to constrain supply. One merely drives competitors out of business by manipulating the perception of risk to a land use preferred by a democratic majority. - Mark Edward Vande Pol
Thank you all for your good thoughts and kind words; it was a tough afternoon/evening and an hollow feeling's in the house today.

If it should be, that I grow frail and weak, And pain should keep me from my sleep, Then, you must do what must be done For this, the last battle, can't be won. Don't let your grief stay your hand, For this day more than the rest, Your love and friendship stand the test. We've had so many years, What is to come can hold no fear. You'd not want me to suffer, so When the time comes, please let me go. Take me where my needs they'll tend, Only, stay with me to the end And hold me firm and speak to me Until my eyes no longer see. I know in time you'll see it is a kindness you do for me Although my tail its last has waved, From pain and suffering I've been saved. Don't grieve it should be you who this thing decides to do. We've been so close, we two, these years, Don't let your heart hold tears. SMILE, FOR WE WALKED TOGETHER FOR AWHILE. Author: Unknown
