Zemir Begic, 32, was driving around at 1:15 a.m. in the city’s Bevo Mill neighborhood when at least three juveniles approached his vehicle and began wailing on it with hammers, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.

The driver, a Bosnian immigrant, got out of the car to confront the assailants, who started yelling at him and pummeling him with the hammers, cops said. After the vicious onslaught was over, Begic — who had only been living in St. Louis for a year — was left battered and broken with injuries to his head, face, mouth and abdomen.

He later died at St. Louis University Hospital, according to the Dispatch.

A 15-year-old and a 16-year-old male were both in police custody Sunday evening as investigators worked to determine a motive, the Dispatch reports. Police said they also know the name of a third suspect and now believe that a fourth was involved as well.

St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson said Begic’s killing did not appear to be motivated by race or ethnicity.

“There is no indication that the gentleman last night was targeted because he was Bosnian,” he said. “There’s no indication that they knew each other.”

Suad Nuranjkovic, 49, was riding in the passenger seat of Begic’s car at the time the unprovoked assault began. The two were on their way home from a bar when the teens bombarded them near the intersection of Gravois Avenue and Itaska Street, according to the Dispatch.

As Begic stood up to the hooligans, Nuranjkovic was able to run across the street to safety.

“I was afraid that if one of them had a gun, they were going to shoot me,” he said. “So I didn’t know what to do.”

Nuranjkovic — who is also Bosnian — has no idea why they were singled out.

“I don’t know why this is happening to Bosnians,” he said. “We could go around and shoot people, too, but we just want peace.”

Outraged Bosnians took to the streets Sunday night to voice their grievances over Begic’s murder and also bring attention to other recent aggressive acts aimed at their people — including the 2013 fatal shooting of a 19-year-old immigrant in Bevo Mill, according to the Dispatch.

Demonstrators, including Begic’s sister Denisa, marched to the location of the heinous hammer attack and called for more to be done to protect the Bosnian community from violence.

“I hope justice is served for my brother because he didn’t deserve this at all,” Denisa said. “I don’t know what to think of it. It’s so wrong what they did.”

Unless my memory is incorrect, on other threads I sensed an attitude that police should not do their jobs either. Run over them is ok but dont shoot them?

I never said that cops shouldn't do their jobs. In this case I said that the grand jury looked at plenty of evidence and even the black witnesses said brown had it coming, he attacked the cop.

In general, I don't like cops, because they spend most of their time in revenue schemes and are for the most part, trigger happy power-mad goons. and cops argue in court for decades that they aren't responsible for protecting anyone. The supreme court has ruled in their favor.

Here is something on a positive note with regard to all of this. The families of these two Bosnians, they will not take this loss lightly. Crossing a Bosnian, is basically writing your own ticket to hell. If their families are connected, I guarantee that the families of these three perpetrators will bleed for what their children have done. Their children will be made to watch their families killed, and then they themselves will likely be murdered in prison.

The Bosnian people are not folk to be trifled with, and if there is one consolation, there will be an industrious Bosnian that will more than likely be dutiful to family and murder each and every last member of these people's families.

In Missouri, they might have ended up in a morgue for even walking down the center yellow lines in single file. In California, I think pedestrians have the legal right of way wherever they are in the street, which might have been a contributing factor there for why Reginald Denny's truck had to stop in park, unlike the Minneapolis car that kept driving. It is best to avoid fights because you might get injured or worse. I know the tendency is you want to teach them (Negros or whoever) a lesson. I'm thinking his reaction was sane for a Bosnian who hasn't been warned about the threat our Black brothers hold. It isn't so much that he thought he could stop them, it's more that some men react spontaneously to danger (beta males need not apply). Some men run into a fire, some run away. Some protect their property & loved ones. Some drop everything and flee. As you know I love boxing and Bosnians are making a big splash in what remains of the sport. They show a fierce spirit and what this kid doesn't shock me having watched many fight to the last punch.

I've also come to realize over the course of my lifetime that anyone who tells you what they would do in the face of eminent danger, is basically clueless. When adrenaline kicks in our actions become unknown - fight or flight in real time. I find it heartless how some people know both what they would do and how this kid should have behaved. Sad stuff.
