Lagos (AFP) - Nigeria's two main oil workers' unions said they would launch an indefinite strike on Monday, threatening to hurt the output of Africa's largest oil producer.

"The strike will affect all operations in the upstream, midstream and downstream sectors of the oil and gas industry, as members will be withdrawn from all oil and gas installations," the unions said in a joint statement on Sunday.

The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association and the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) said the action was aimed at forcing the passage of a new law and meeting several other longstanding demands.

These include the adoption of the long-awaited Petroleum Industry Bill aimed at overhauling the inefficient and corrupt sector and tackling unfair labour practises by both oil companies and government agencies.

The unions said the strike call was also a reaction to "the inability of the government to carry out turnaround maintenance of the refineries" and its failure to reduce petrol prices at the pump to reflect the fall in global oil prices.

They said workers had been mobilised and that the action would "not be suspended" until the government and operators showed "a strong commitment" to resolve the issues.

They accused the government of failing to keep its promises to maintain the refineries and ensure they had an adequate supply of crude oil, as well as neglecting to combat pipeline vandalism.

The unions also demanded improvements to the country's notoriously neglected roads.

Despite its oil wealth, Nigeria imports much of its fuel due to a lack of refining capacity.

The majority of people in Africa's biggest economy live on less than $1 per day and corruption is rife, triggers periodic bouts of social unrest.

Foghorn You know it's coming.... "Hallo, My name is Dr. Charles Soto Esq. I am third cousin to the Directer of the Ministry of Oil in Nigeria. My cousin, the Minister has accumulated a large fortune that he would like to invest in your country. But do to the impending oil strike he needs the assistance of an honest person in your country to help broker the transactions...7-1

[ [Phillip] I got the intimate, hand written version. A 'contractor' overcharged the govt by $20 million and needed me to help him move the money out of the country.

[R124C41+] Mine was more blatant. It said, "I could feed you a lot of crap about my cousin and all the money he has locked up in something or other, but why waste my time. How about you just send me $10,000 and I'll quit lying to you".

Lil Jim African Government Corruption.......same problem they have in Detroit, Michigan. IMAGINE THAT? 10

Phillip Amazing. The workers have to go on strike to force the govt to maintain their refineries and secure the oil pipelines. The workers know what's good for the country obviously better than the govt. 8-1

ScottG The only problem with Nigeria is that its filled with a bunch of Nigerians. 3-1

Randy We have had contracts in place in Nigeria for several years to build roads and power plants, and nothing has come of it. Since it costs $100,000. per trip for protection, facilities and food for a week or so, they don't make it really worth a lot of effort. Big on talk and slow on the performance.
