The US Central Intelligence Agency has admitted that half of UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s were the country’s U-2 spy planes.

"Reports of unusual activity in the skies in the '50s? It was us," the CIA said in a tweet on Monday.

The agency explained that it was testing the spy planes at altitudes of over 60,000 feet. The figure was not believable at that time.

According to the spy agency, the document explaining that scenario was the most widely read document released this year by the CIA from their database.

The U-2 spy plane is flown by the United States Air Force now.

Some 104 U-2 spy planes have been built in total.

The Soviet Union shot down one of the planes in 1960 at 70,500 feet when it was trying to cross the country by going from Pakistan's air space then Norway's air space.

In 1997, The New York Times said in an article that the U-2 planes were developed to photograph targets from secret bases in California and Nevada.

Nonsense.

In the 1950s, working for the CAA in NY, the CIA often ran U2s from Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico Naval air station, to Goose Bay, Labrador, no refueling, well above CAA controlled airspace.

U being the designator meaning "UTILITY" aircraft, it did not take a genius to add 2 plus 2 and get an answer of 5.

The Russians were well aware of the U2, from its inception.

Too bogus for words, imo.

Propaganda is fun.

Here's the exact same release from the opposite perspective.

Beware of vague swill.

The still flying U2s are being flown by 1St Recon. Sq at Beale AFB in CA. I did time in that SQ. before the U2 was around.

In my time, NSA was running the overflights, not CIA. We lost friends, many friends.

The job then and now is mandatory, there is NO exception.

Was there a record of the loss, or did it just "not happen."?

Good question for intelligent, thinking men....

The Russians always knew when the U2s were coming, do you know how?????

The answer will surprise you, it was nothing they did.

Routine training flight, lost at sea.

The Air Force was sorry, the families got 10K and a line of drivel. They never knew what their loved ones were doing.

13 June 1952 A US Air Force RB-29 Superfortress (44-61810) of the 91st Strategic Reconnaissance Squadron, based in Yokota Japan, was shot down by Soviet fighters over the Sea of Japan, 18 miles from the Soviet coast, near Hokkaido. Soviet MiG-15 Fagot pilots Fedotov and Proskurin reported intercepting the aircraft in the area of Valentin Bay, nine miles from the Soviet coastline.

They reported that the RB-29 fired on the Soviet fighters, when intercepted. The Soviet pilots returned fire and the US plane descended, burst into flames and crashed into the water at a distance of about 18 miles from our coastline. Official US records state that the aircraft was on a classified surveillance mission of shipping activity over the Sea of Japan.

The plane was followed by radar over the course of the flight until 1320 hours at which time the radar contact was lost. Empty life rafts were spotted by search aircraft the next day. Radio Moscow stated on June 16 stated that one officer survivor had been picked up by a Russian vessel about two days before. The name of the survivor was not given and efforts to confirm the report were unsuccessful. The crew of Sam Busch, Robert J. McDonnell, Roscoe G. Becker, Eddie R. Berg, Leon F. Bonura, William R. Homer, Samuel D. Service, James A. Sculley, William A. Blizzard, Miguel W. Monserrat , Danny Pillsbury and David L. Moore were all listed as missing, presumed dead.

I attended the funeral service for these men at NSA in Washington, when Clinton was president.

Clinton admitted they were shot down over Vladivostok on a spy mission. At that time the crew I was on had Vladivostok as an A-bomb target.

These men and others provided us with overhead photos and all the latest Russian radar capabilities. At the funeral service there were no known survivors for several crew members. Sad day.

Hundreds present and former military in attendance, not a dry eye in the place. So long ago.

The US Central Intelligence Agency has admitted that half of UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s were the country’s U-2 spy planes.

I'm not buying that. At altitude, the U2 travels in fairly straight lines, it does not make violent maneuvers, it is only going about 405-mph, it resembles a lonely jet flying very high (if contrails are present) at what seems to be a fairly slow pace. It Will Not put on impressive bursts of speed and make 90- degree turns, zoom around, etc.

half of UFO sightings in the 1950s and 1960s were the country’s U-2 spy planes.

So explain the other half of the UFO sightings??

Every morning, around 8:00 AM, I can look to the east where I live and see a long tubular looking artifact in the sky being lit up by the sun. I have taken photos of this object. It seems to be stationary, and just seems to be hanging out there.

It's not an airplane, it's not a contrail, it's not an aircraft that looks like anything. It's just this white round tube.

Yet, when I tell people about it, and point it out, they just shrug their shoulders and not think about it. It's nothing.

If it were nothing, then why am I seeing it?

Perhaps a standing lenticular cloud?

Usually alone, small, remain motionless for hours.

I'll see if I can post a photo. I'm pretty sure it isn't a cloud, for the fact that it's shape is very crisp and not like a cloud at all.

Standing Lenticular is sharp, well defined edges, usually elongated.

Get well soon. He's been busy at other topics and I'm not getting any younger here. That project could take me years and years because I'm not a U2 historian like you.

You DO know the answer.

I'm going to guess for now that it's something more complicated than bird flight patterns or you would have just typed those 3 words instead of 4 sentences.

OKAY...

U2 flights were combination aerial photography and electronic recording surveillance.

Photography requires clear skies.

When ever very large high pressure area, with clear skies, was forecast for most of Western Russia, the Russians knew the U2s would be coming.

And they did.

General interest...

We never knew of any flights except those from Puerto Rico to Goose Bay, Labrador.

If one looks at world map, that flight roughly paralells a flight from Pakistan to Bode, Norway.

Even the weather on each end is the same, tropical at the start, frigid at the end. We never had a flight in reverse, ever. There were so many oddities that we started putting bits and pieces together.

For instance, he was watched by radar all the way, that was impossible, or was there something we did not know.

While researching the U2 topic, one of the interesting things I read is that Lee Harvey Oswald was a radar operator at a U2 base. Even more intriguing, I thought, was Eisenhower's opposition to Military personnel flying U2 aircraft. Astonishingly, he preferred to use non-US citizens for those flights and the nationalities of the foreign pilots recruited has reportedly, as of July 2013, remained classified. I can't even imagine any sensible reasoning for that, can you?
