ATLANTA (Reuters) - As epidemic flu spreads across the United States, with 15 child deaths reported in nine states so far this year, federal health officials said on Tuesday they could not yet predict the severity of the current season. Four of the children died during the week ending Dec. 20, when flu reached epidemic levels for children and adults, according to the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention. Nine states have reported child deaths: Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Minnesota, North Carolina, Nevada, Ohio, Texas and Virginia, the agency reported. With flu season extending from the fall into the spring, the toll is likely to increase, said Joe Bresee, Epidemiology and Prevention Branch chief for the CDCs influenza division. Flu is amazingly unpredictable, Bresee said. As flu becomes more common and more intense over the next few weeks, unfortunately those death numbers and hospitalization numbers will continue to rise. There were 109 child flu deaths in the last flu season, according to the CDC. Adult deaths from pneumonia and the flu have not reached the peaks of the last two seasons, said the CDC, which does not have real-time estimates on the number of adult deaths. Bresee urged people who have not yet been vaccinated to get their flu immunizations, which the CDC recommends for nearly everyone over the age of six months. The virus poses greatest risks to the very young and the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions. Symptoms of the flu include fever, chills, runny nose, sore throat, headaches and fatigue. (Editing by Letitia Stein; Editing by Mohammad Zargham) Poster Comment: jonathan 15 deaths in 9 states. That is about .00000002% or even less. Epidemic? where? Not here. Big Pharma scaring you, making you afraid that you might get the flu. Oh no, I better get my flu shot so I can get sick from it before I get the flu. I will never get a flu shot. If it happens to kill me, darn. All the flu shot does is weaken your immune system and make you more suseptable to germs. Do yourself a favor and skip the flu shot. 31-32 Murphy 14-11 Amen! Notice that all they do is push these flu shots on people, and what happens? Every year the flu gets deadlier and deadlier. This makes perfect sense: The more viciously we kill the microbes, the deadlier they evolve to be. And there is a new generation of viruses like, every 20 minutes or so. Antibiotics and flu shots are sheer folly . Angel The H3N2 flu strain that is in the shot this season has mutated. This is not news and was reported a few weeks ago. The best thing that parents can do is keep their children home from school, sport practices, their friends, other family etc.. If people get mad, then they will just have to deal with it and get over themselves with their opinions. I don't know how many times already this year a sick kid has went to a sports practice when they should have been home, happened just yesterday. The parents need to get a clue that nothing is as important then their own kids and others health. This nation has become so competitive and doesn't care about others first. We are disgusting and as adults if you do this, you are a failure to your own kids when teaching them right from wrong. Yes parents, I am talking to you. If you don't want to be seen as a failure in parenting, then keep your sick kids home! 99-1 Kim Hurray Angel! Yes, this has become a bad habit in our culture, and it needs to be corrected. The final straw for me was when I was in a garden center, and saw a woman wheeling her pajama-clad four year-old all over the store, lying in the shopping cart. When the child would vomit, she would just wipe it up and keep right on shopping. Have we really devolved into swine? Rebecca pointed out that some employers discipline workers for staying home when sick. Maybe we should comprise a list of employers who require sick employees to come to work, and tell those employers to change their policies or be boycotted. 16-1 glideair Sports and the sport's-lobby have billions of dollars to fortify their agenda, which is (to make more money). A preponderance of sport's-junkies are on the side of sport's-promoters. What can we expect when we as children are indoctrinated into sports from kindergarten through high school and beyond. Sports started out as a good thing until certain capitalists saw an opportunity to make a lot of money with it. Kids and adults alike are, un-necessarily dying, on the practice fields and in regular games due in large part to the competitiveness of the games and the money involved. An "anything-to-win" attitude is sometimes not cost-effective. It's all about priorities. 1-2 Joe Dr.Klenner-Vit C-Flu google it. 4-1 [GailD] I got the norovirus just before New Year's Day 2013 and spent several days in the hospital because I was soooo sick (I was 69 at the time). Then my poor husband contracted it from me, and our daughter got it when she came to visit me in the hospital! Plus, because I didn't know I was sick with it I'm sure I passed it on to a few people before I realized how sixk I was! I contracted it going to the hospital for blood work before a doctor's appointment later that week (which of course was cancelled since the doctor saw me in the hospital). People should think two or three times before they go out to spread their viruses and bacteria throughout the community! I know that if I am sick with something communicable I STAY THE HELL HOME WHERE I BELONG! Older people's lives are threatened by viruses and bacteria that younger people can throw off ... I have COPD and diabetes and therefore anything like that is a risk for me. I CANNOT IMAGINE TAKING A SICK CHILD OUT OF THE HOUSE OR SENDING HIM/HER TO SCHOOL! Once upon a time we had some sense and realized that it was very poor "mothering" to subject a sick child to anything but bed rest, chicken soup and some TV and comic books to spend their sick time. School? Ridiculous to send a sick child to school ... these people are NUTS! Oh, well ..2 ...... redbone007 Reported on 9/14/2014 The Center for Disease Control identified Enterovirus D68 (EV-D68) in Kansas City and Chicago, and yesterday the Iowa Department of Public Health reported the virus in their neck of the woods. Samples from central Ohio are still pending (as of this writing), but none of us should be surprised to hear the official announcement that EV-D68 has arrived. In fact, if public health officials are correct in their prediction (and I believe they are), this virus will eventually make its way across the entire country. So what is Enterovirus D68? Until now, EV-D68 was an uncommon member of the enterovirus family of microorganisms. You know a few of its relativesRhinovirus (culprit of the common cold), What symptoms does Enterovirus D68 cause? The current outbreak of EV-D68 appears to be isolated to the respiratory tract. This means it causes runny nose, mild sore throat, cough and congestion. Why are so many kids experiencing severe disease? At this time, we dont have a definite answer to this question. There are many possibilities. One likely explanation is that children in affected areas have not had previous exposure to this virus and do not have immunity against it.12-2 usapatriot1026 And what do those locations have in common? Those places were where the illegals from central America were bussed and flown to. When they started attending school, they spread their diseases like EV-D68 to American school children. This isn't the first time this virus has caused an outbreak in this country. It happened about 40 years ago as well, but it came from central America then too. 11-12 Wendy I have found some replies to articles to be more accurate and informative than the articles themselves 6 [Kristen] I take vitamin C, goldenseal and Echinacea, and have some raw honey. Anytime I even start to feel slightly sick that is what I take and it works every time. Way more effective than a nasty flu shot. 11-4 Lori LZinc works really well if you use it when you first notice symptoms, or you can buy Zicam, as that is what it is that makes it effective. 8-4 Richard Sorry, but the term "epidemic" has nothing to do with mortality or morbidity of a disease, but rather has to do with the widespread occurrence of an infectious disease within a population or community at a particular point in time. The CDC is not acting as a "shill for the pharmaceutical companies" (an accomplice of a hawker, gambler, or swindler who acts as an enthusiastic customer to entice or encourage others) - they are simply reporting the facts about rates of infections, and the morbidity and mortality of such infections. Yes, the CDC recommends vaccination. It is estimated that vaccination prevents about 7 million influenza infections in the US each year (but of course, that likely varies depending on influenza prevalence in any given year (15-60 million infections per year in the US). Vaccination is far from perfect since influenza mutates every year and each year's vaccine differs from the prior year's strain, and is based on a educated estimate of likely strain(s) in the next epidemic year. Still, the CDC, by reporting facts, and making a recommendation based on the fact that reducing prevalence in a population reduces disease burden (morbidity and mortality) and reduces the likelihood that individuals (even non-vaccinated individuals) will be infected. 4-2 Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread Top Page Up Full Thread Page Down Bottom/Latest

Wife brought home this new batch of Flu after going back home for the holidays. At first I was fine. Within 24 hours, I had chills and tremors so bad I couldn't walk. My heart started to beat irregularly, and after the fever broke, I got about a 8 hour reprieve, then the crap started up again. I seem to be fine now. Needless to say, this flu is not a joke. It will screw up your plans and screw up your day pretty fast. What struck me was how fast the stuff seemed to move. One day to gestate, one day to try to kill you, and then have it linger for about 3 more days. If you catch it, you will know what it is pretty fast. Would I get vaccinated? No. Because once you've beaten it, you're not going to get it again. The last time I was this sick was about 4 years ago. I'm still a bit off, but I'm at least functioning. Just had a running nose for a day. Took a couple Echinacea tabs. No more symptoms.
