James Howard Meredith, born June 25, 1933 in Kosciusko, Mississippi, makes a lot of people uncomfortable. So much so that in the 90's he said he had to move out of California "to make ends meet" after no one wanted to pay him to appear at speaking engagements anymore. Educated at the University of Mississippi and Columbia Law School, Meredith was known for becoming the first black student at the University of Mississippi. Meredith supported David Duke for governor of Louisiana and even appeared in a TV ad for him in 1991. He supported Duke's efforts to reform the welfare system because "it has caused dependency rather than self reliance," adding "the liberals will be surprised how much of the black vote he receives."
