The United Nations Security Council will hold a meeting next week to discuss ways to end the spiraling deadly clashes in eastern Ukraine.
The 15-member council will meet on Wednesday at the request of Lithuania in an attempt to find a solution to the deadly crisis which has flared up in recent days.
Earlier this week, fierce fighting erupted around the airport of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic, forcing monitors from the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) to leave the region.
Over the past two days, at least six Ukrainian forces and five civilians lost their lives in clashes between the Ukraine army and pro-Russia forces. According to reports, 18 others were also wounded in the fighting.
In another deadly incident on Tuesday, at least ten civilians were killed and a number of others wounded after a rocket attack targeted a bus near Donetsk.
The two mainly Russian-speaking regions of Donetsk and Luhansk in eastern Ukraine have been the scene of deadly clashes between pro-Russia protesters and the Ukrainian army since Kiev’s military operation started in April last year in a bid to crush the protests.
Violence intensified in May 2014 after the two flashpoint regions held local referendums in which their residents voted overwhelmingly in favor of independence from Ukraine and joining the Russian Federation.
According to the latest figures released by the United Nations, more than 4,700 people have been killed in the fighting.
