According to the Corn Refiners Association, high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is sold primarily in 2 different formulations 42% fructose (HFCS-42 or 55% fructose (HFCS-55) with the remainder made up of higher sugars and glucose. Whereas the very sweet 55% fructose formula is primarily used in carbonate soft drinks, the less sweet HFCS-42 is used in baked goods, fruit flavored beverages and other processed foods that run the gamut from spaghetti sauces to yogurt. Now it seems there is a third HFCS product HFCS-90 (90% fructose) that is used in light and natural foods where not much sweetener is needed. The kicker? Foods that use this ingredient do not have to use High Fructose Corn Syrup on their label they are permitted to simply state it as fructose or fructose syrup both of which sound sneakily healthy. High fructose corn syrup is a seemingly innocuous ingredient that has become a cheap replacement for natural sugar over the last several decades, and is now found in a vast majority of food in a regular grocery store. In those same few decades, several other things have also grown in number the rates of serious metabolic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease and obesity. There have been numerous studies showing the negative consequences of HFCS on human health, and it is not difficult to draw the correlating lines to see that this ingredient may not be as harmless as it seems. So which companies are deceiving you with its labels? General Mills, for one. Their Vanilla Chex cereal states on the front of it box that it has no high fructose corn syrup. Yet, turn it over and look at the ingredient list and you will see the newest HFCS on the block, labeled simply as fructose. So the next time you are at the grocery store and youre looking for healthier options, you should not believe everything you see on the front of the box. And if you REALLY want to play it safe and healthy, fresh, made-from-scratch meals cant be beat. Poster Comment: This is a bit disconcerting. I do not eat many of these items at all, though. ;) Post Comment Private Reply Ignore Thread
